$150 Checking Account Bonus at Amalgamated Bank Extended Again

Amalgamated Bank's $150 checking account promotion has been extended to December 31, 2007. This extension is now listed in the pdf promotion page on their home page.

I was told in July that this is available to people in any state. Application can be done online. Several readers have commented that they have not received a hard credit inquiry for opening the checking or savings account. This bonus started in July. I last reported on it in September when they first extended the offer. A few readers had completed the requirements in August and were still waiting for the bonuses as of September. One commenter mentioned being told by the banking rep that it should take around 2 months after meeting the requirements to receive the bonus.

This promotion does takes some work to receive the full $150 bonus:
  • $75 for opening a free checking account and starting direct deposit in the first 3 months
  • $25 for signing up for a debit card and making 3 purchases in the first 3 months
  • $25 for enrolling in online banking and paying 3 bills online in the first 3 months
  • $25 for opening a CD or a savings account

You can also open this checking account at one of their branches which are located in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC and in Pasadena, California. The bank has been FDIC insured since 1934.

Thanks to the reader who mentioned the promotion extension.

Do you have to have direct deposit in order to qualify for the other bonuses?

Dear any and all,

I recently found this wonderfull blog and have been lurking and reading.

I would like to get clarity on these credit checks banks do which as mentioned can impact your credit score. If Im for example going to invest for exampla 100,000. into their bank, granted a lump sum like that could get you audited for laundering or tax evasion which I can understand, but to insult people with credit checks when its us who should be able to do a credit check on the banks officers to make sure we are not robbed by embezzlers, and mess with our scores, thats totally out of line imho.
Am I missing something?

I thank you for any elucidation and thanks to the host here who is providing such a valuble service.

To answer the first commenter's question - I believe in an earlier comment somewhere on this deal (not sure if it was here or on FW), someone mentioned that if you don't qualify for the first bonus ($75) you do not become eligible for the additional 3 bonuses. However, you could ask the bank to confirm.

I opened a checking and savings account and just received $100 bonus posted to my account in late December about 3 months after I opened the account. Thanks for posting this deal!
