3.00% 18-Month CD at Sunshine Bank in Florida
Apr 21, 2009 - 12:00 PM by Ken Tumin
Sunshine Savings Bank continues to offer some competitive CD rates. The best rates require a $50K minimum deposit. These include a 2.50% APY 12-month CD, a 3.00% APY 18-month CD, a 3.10% APY 24-month CD and a 3.50% APY 48-month CD. Rates are about 25 basis points lower for a $10K minimum and 50 basis points lower for a $1K minimum. Similar high rates are also available for Traditional and Roth IRAs. The 18-month CD IRA has a 3.10% APY. These rates are listed at the bank's rate table as of 4/21/09.
In this January post I describe how you may be able to open this special CD without a branch visit. It's definitely easier if you can visit a branch, and note that bank policies on this issue often change. Branches are located in the Florida cities of Tallahasseeand Pembroke Pines which is located between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Update: I was just informed that they closed their Pembroke Pines branch on 4/15/09.
The bank has some decent ratings for soundness: 3.5 stars (good) at BauerFinancial and 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 12/31/08 financial data.
This is one of the rare banks that used to be a credit union. It changed to an FDIC insured bank in July 2007 (Certificate # 58452).
Other High Certificate of Deposit Rates
For top CD rates nationally available, refer to my weekly rate summary. Many of the best CD deals are only locally available. To find the best deals in your state, refer to the index of state CD and bank deals.

Thanks for the info. I just called for additional info. The bank didn't close, but they did just closed the Pembroke Pines branch on 4/15/09. The branches in Tallahassee remain open. They have not updated their website with this information.
