$100 Checking Account Bonus at SharePlus Federal Bank in CA, TX, IN & KY - Local Only

SharePlus Federal Bank is offering up to $100 for opening a checking account and performing additional activities. The account must be opened on August 28th or 29th. Below is the list of required activities to earn the full $100:
  • $25 when you open account with eStatements
  • $25 when you set up direct deposit of payroll or social security
  • $25 when you set up online banking and pay 5 bills online
  • $25 for making 5 debit card purchases
Minimum opening balance is $100. This promo doesn't seem to be listed at the bank's website. It was advertised in today's (8/27/2009) Dallas Morning News. The ad is available online here.

The bank also has branches outside of Texas, so I called the bank to ask about availability. According to the CSR, customers can open the checking account by phone to qualify for this promotion. However, the bank has geographic restrictions like a credit union. According to the bank's membership page you can be eligible if you live or work in a county or bordering county where a bank branch is located. These would include counties around Dallas, Texas, Louisville, Kentucky and Irvine, California. Refer to the membership page for other ways to be eligible.

Any of the checking accounts qualify including the free checking. The paperless feature in the ad just refers to electronic statements. The checking account still has paper checks (first box of checks are free). According to the CSR, they don't do a hard credit inquiry when you apply for the checking account. There are only a ChexSystem verification and a soft inquiry.

The bank used to be a credit union and is now a mutual savings bank which has the credit union trait of being customer (member) owned. As described at SharePlus's FAQ: "As a mutual savings bank, SharePlus Federal Bank is not owned by stock holders, but instead by our customers." SharePlus Federal Bank has been a FDIC member since 2004 (FDIC Certificate # 57760).
