iPod touch Checking Account Promotion at Bank of the West - Certain States Only

POSTED ON BY

Bank of the West

Update 5/12/2011: This Bank of the West promotion has ended. The latest iPod touch promotion is being offered by KeyBank. Please refer to this iPod touch bonus post for more details.

Bank of the West just came out with another checking account promotion. I just posted on their $100 checking account bonus on Sunday. They're now offering a free Apple iPod touch when you open one of their checking accounts, and complete a few requirements. Here's the promotions page (now inactive). It's also listed on the bank's front page. The offer is scheduled to last until 9/3/2010. They give you three different ways to qualify after you open the checking account:

  • Minimum monthly recurring direct deposit of $500. OR
  • Make 10 bill payments with Bank of the West Online Banking, OR
  • Make 20 debit card transactions

This was similar to the $100 bonus, except they added the 20 debit card purchases. The main issue with a gift reward is that they may report a value of the gift that's too high to the IRS. The bank doesn't seem to specify the iPod model, and they do say in the small print that the "iPod touch shipped may differ from the iPod touch shown." Based on a quick search on Google, it appears the value of the cheapest iPod touch is at lesat $150.

Update 8/16/2010: The small print has changed. In addition to the new end date of 8/20/2010, more people can qualify. The new small print includes the following:

Offer valid for qualifying accounts opened in person at participating branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV or for accounts opened online by residents of AZ, CA, CO, ID, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, WI and WY.

Below is the offer's small print with my highlights of some of the important details:

Open any new personal checking account and either establish minimum monthly recurring direct deposit of $500, or make 10 bill payments with Bank of the West Online Banking or make 20 debit card transactions. Direct deposit must be payroll, Social Security, pension or other government benefits. Qualifying debit card transactions include signature, or PIN-based purchases only. Qualifying transactions must be completed by 10/31/10. Offer valid for new personal checking accounts opened from 07/19/10 – 09/3/10 with $100 or more from a financial institution other than Bank of the West. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer and is subject to change without prior notice and may be terminated at any time. Offer valid for qualifying accounts opened at participating branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV or opened online. Offer does not apply to second or multiple checking accounts. Limit of one new checking account bonus per household per calendar year. iPod touch will be shipped to your account address of record by December 15, 2010. You must have a U.S. mailing address on 10/31/10 to be eligible. Accounts overdrawn or closed as of 10/31/10 are not eligible for this offer. The iPod touch shipped may differ from the iPod touch shown. To the extent required by law, Bank of the West will report the value of the iPod touch to the IRS on Form 1099. Any applicable taxes are the responsibility of the account holder. All accounts are subject to the Bank’s standard terms and conditions and fee schedule.

Please note the small print: "Offer valid for qualifying accounts opened at participating branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV or opened online." This explains why these states were excluded in the $100 promotion. So if you don't live in these states, you may want to check with Bank of the West. When I checked with Bank of the West in March, I was told that the online account application is limited to states which have Bank of the West branches. See my $100 promotion review for a list of these states.

Regarding a hard credit pull, I was told earlier this year that they don't do a hard credit inquiry in the application (only a soft pull). So you shouldn't have to worry about a ding to your credit score.

Bank of the West is one of the large regional banks. It has $61.18 billion in assets and $41.38 billion in deposits. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 3514).

Thanks to the reader who emailed me news of this promotion.

I called them, the online account rep knows this promotion (BTW: it is on their main page). He told me if you can open online and do not have their checking account before, you are qualify for this promotion. So all states Bank of The West server should qualify. I asked if I qualify (I live in NE), he said yes.

They changed the wording to clarify

Offer valid for qualifying accounts opened in person at participating branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV or for accounts opened online by residents of AZ, CA, CO, ID, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, WI and WY.

I am glad I read your site first and reviewed the promotion on the BofW site prior to stepping into a branch. I sat down with a banker that knew nothing about the promotion!

First, she told me I had to open an interest-checking account with $10k in it. Second, when I corrected her with information I saw online, she switched to another language to speak with another banker. Third, she said the opening balance was $150. Fourth, when I told her I didn't bring enough money with me, she asked me to give her my personal information and bring in the deposit later.

I told her I needed to think it over and left the branch. Never open an account with an unknowledgeable banker!

made few of the last 20 required transactions on 10/30 however since they posted on 11/1 they are now saying I missed the deadline and will not get the ipod touch. According to the requirement I COMPLETED 20 transactions by 10/31. Is this fair and anyone know if I can do anything?

Jay,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation man.  I don't think you really have any grounds since they can say 20 transaction on records. Since Debit transaction, or any credit transaction, takes time to settle, just because you have made charges on 10/30, it may not be on the record until 11/1.  They can be a** and tell you that you had 3 months.  I heard it from good friend of mine, who works in BOTW, they had to cut promo early, so they'll probably cut you off on this one.

I just got off the phone with BoftheW and they said because they understood that the 31st was a Sunday, they would honor purchases made by the 31st as long as they cleared by the 3rd. Hope that is true! My last three transactions were made on the 28th and the 29th and didn't clear until the 1st!

nothing like waiting till the last min to mail it out haha. On there website it says this:

If qualified for the offer, you will receive an 8GB iPod touch®, model P/N# MC0866LL/A*.

So not sure what would make you get a 170 value vs $199 value. Maybe depending when you opened your account during the promo if they ran out of the 199$ value ones? Not sure.

On by bank statment is says $170, so i'm not sure where everyone is getting $190 from unless some people are getting newer models. I believe the $170 one is the 2ng generation accoriding to Bank of the West's FAQ page (it doesnt directly say "2nd generation" but they do give you like a model number and if you google it, it will pop up with the 2ng generation ipod toch).

Im still waiting.......

I spoke to my buddies mom who is the BW manager in our towns branch and she said they ran out of the 3rd generation itouches quicker then expected, so they had to go back and buy more for the people who signed up after they ran out so they bought 4th generation ones since they were out of the 3rd gen. She said that the people who were doing direct paycheck deposit electronically get the 4th gen itouches, and the people that did 20 transactions by putting cash in their account then using the debit card at stores will get the 3rd generation ones. I'm not sure how true this info is, but since it's coming from the woman who ran the program, it's probably credible information.

Actually if you do a search in yahoo for MC0866LL/A, it comes up with ebay items for 3rd gen. I just got mine yesterday. It's definately not the 4th gen. Mine was marked as $170 and I did the 20 debit transactions in CA. My friend also got hers the day before...her info same as mine.

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but the "3rd" generaton 8gb iPod touch is EXACTLY the same is the 2nd generation iPod touch. According the cnet.com and the fact that Steve Jobs said it himself in his key-note speech, only the 32 and 64gb models for the 3rd generation iPod touch will have the "new" hardwear in them. The cheaper 8gb model is unchanged from other year.

i think you can email them asking for it, but remember it says it's shipped by 12/15 and if you don't get it after that then to email them. But a lot of people emailed them and got the tracking number and that was for people that had 170$ credit the ones with the 199$ credit have gotten emails saying that as soon as a tracking number is avail it will be emailed to them, so I am assuming those ones have yet to be shipped. Let us know if you get a reply. I thikn you also just email them through your online banking

I have been following this thread....

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/1017519/

if you read the last 5 pages or so it shows letters from the bank talking about the difference in why some accounts had 170$ vs 199$....according to one of the post the bank says they ran out and when they went back to apple to obtain more apple had stopped making that model therefor a different version had to be purchased. The bank never says what version, but everyone assumes it's the newest one.

I had the $199 credit and I am still waiting, should ship out tomorow.

Today is Dec 15 and I haven't received mine.  I called the 1-800 number to BOTW and the rep said today I qualified for the iTouch campaign since I made monthly direct deposit from my payroll with $500 or more.  All iPod touchs had been shipped out and I expect to receivd the itouch from USPS within 7 to 10 business days.  If I still don't get it by end of Dec, I can call the same number in early Jan to claim.  However, when I check my Sept to Nov statement, it never stated the value of the iTouch I will receive.  My friend received his yesterday and it stated the 1099-INT will report the value of $170, and he used 20 debit card transactions.

I got my iPod on the 14th. I'm sending this massage through my iPod in fact. They sent me the 8gb 2nd generation (8gb 2nd and 3rd generation are the same). I had the $170 credited on my account. I'm so jealous of those who had the $199. This iPod is a bit lagy and the speakers are horrible comared to the new ones.

$170 ipod shipped out 11/30/2010 and received 12/11/2010.  Assume $199 ipod should shipped out 12/15/2010, then estimate delivery date will 12/26/2010, also due to the holidays, it might cause some delay. Hopefully can make it before new year!

Wow. A lot of info here. I got the message "CREDIT PROMO OFFER - IPOD TOUCH $199 VALUE"  in my account NOV 11. So I guess I qualified for my iPod touch. The FAQs said it would be model # xxx which is a 2nd gen. 3rd gen did NOT have an 8GB. (it was the same just bigger GB - google= ipod models). I am still waiting patiently. I hope I get the NEW 4th GEN w face time. That would be dope. Someone said it was shipped in a bubble wrap envelope? Crazy

I live in Cali and have not rec'd my itouch yet. I called in to customer service and they indicated that they do not have the tracking number however I am getting the newer 4th generation per the rep. It is true that if your statement shows a value of $199 then you will get the 4th generation. If your statement shows $170, then you will get the 3rd generation also per the customer service rep. She could not say what the deciding factor was in handing out 3rd gens Vs 4th gen. My brother opened up his account the same day with identical opening deposits and 20 debit transactions on each account to qualify for the offer. His statement has the $170 value so he is not too happy about the 3rd gen coming his way.

Yes the back is engraved with a large Bank of the West LOGO, Bear included. Kinda cool. Shipping took from Dec 15 from IN to NV to CA to my house DEC 27. WTF? My dad works for the USPS so I won't say anything. LOL. iPod is here, its REAL and NEW. I am happy with the iPod and BOTW. They are a little slow but, thats how they make their money.

I live in Santa Barbara, CA and still have not received the iPod touch. I tracked the item and it showed it was shipped on 12/15, and the last scan is from 12/21.  But now almost a month later, nothing. I made a claim with the usps and with the bank.  The USPS said that 50 packages were supposed to go to my area, but somehow only 45 made it.  Then they told me that unless the item was insured, there was nothing they can do.  Bank of the West has been no help.  They keep telling me to contact usps.  I finally spoke to a supervisor who told me it may take another month to resolve the problem, "sorry!"  Their customer service is seriously lacking.  It better be a 4th gen when I finally do get it.
