Bank of the West's $100 Checking Account Bonus

Bank of the West

Update 4/3/2011: The bonus has been extended to 4/22/2011.

Bank of the West has another $100 checking account bonus. This new bonus is scheduled to last until 3/25/2011, and like the promotion from last July it allows either direct deposit of at least $250 or 10 online bill payments. One difference is that this new one requires that each bill payment be at least $25. The direct deposit or bill payment most be completed within 60 days of account opening.

Update 2/14/11: The promotion is now listed on Bank of the West's website. Here's the promotion link.

As of today, a promotion doesn't appear to be listed on Bank of the West's website. It was advertised in today's Oklahoman newspaper (2/13/11). The ad is available online here. I called Bank of the West (800 488-2265) for more details. According to the CSR, this promo begins on Monday (2/14/2011), and it should be available at all branches and online. My guess is that we may see a promotion page at Bank of the West's website tomorrow. I'll update this post if one appears.

Bank of the West's Free Checking qualifies for the promotion. Minimum initial deposit is $100. There's no minimum balance requirement or monthly fees.

Many readers participated in Bank of the West's iPod touch promotion last year. Most have reported receiving the iPod.

Regarding a hard credit pull, I was told last year that they don't do a hard credit inquiry in the application (only a soft pull). So you shouldn't have to worry about a ding to your credit score. However, ChexSystems could cause an issue. One reader reported last year that it's their policy to deny applications when ChexSystems report more than 6 inquiries in the previous 6 months.

Update 2/14/11: There is no mention of geographic restriction at Bank of the West's promotion page. However, I called again today, and the CSR said only those in their market areas would qualify.

Last year's promotions were limited to Bank of the West's market area. Hopefully, I'll be able to update this if the promotion is posted online.

Bank of the West is one of the large regional banks with over 650 branches in the following states: AZ, CA, CO, ID, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, WI and WY.

The bank has an overall health score at of 4 out of 5 with a Texas Ratio of 15.30% based on September 2010 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Bank of the West for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 3514).

Bank of the West = Crooks of the West

This is the bank that last year closed my account without telling me in advance and no bonus was ever paid and they kept me in dark for three months, holding on to my funds and at the end the only reason they could think off to give for living me in the cold was:

“We reviewed your account and decided that you are just outside of our service area, therefore, we no longer can service your account.”

No apologies, no thanks, no advance notice, rude CSR after my complain to the supervisor and they denied all of my debit cards purchases before the closing of the account.

I may be wrong, but I believe that even though the Free Checking account does not have a monthly service charge, it does have an inactivity fee for no activity in a given month. If this would be an issue for you, please check first.

Bank of the west is by far the worst bank I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.  I had to close some accounts after my dad passed away.  This bank was unbelieveable! What took a day or at the longest a week or two at other banks,  took months and repeated visits to complete at BOTW.  This was the San Clemente branch.  Beware!

FYI, I opened in branch today, and they say it is possible they will close my account due to 3 inquiries in the last 3 month! Be aware! I will keep this updated...

You can forget about the bonus. They'll give you a hard time if you really wanna get it. I did the best I could to get my direct transfer done ASAP and fortunate enough to get it in w/in 45 days out of the 60 day time period required by BofW.  It normally takes that long to process where I work. I called 1-800 number and I was told that I'm not even enrolled in the program.  I called  Manager and he told me they need 2 direct deposits and will not believe my argument that it takes at leat 45 days for a change of direct transfer to be facilitated where I work. Now I must provide paperworks or Email that I am telling the truth, paperworks on when I processed this at work etc. Is this still worth the $100 BS ? I don't care about the bonus anymore. Just a matter of principle, I want to give him all the facts that he wanted and then close my the account for sure. Because I have a gut feeling, that after all these BS, he will tell me that I wasn't even enrolled in the bonus program, blame the person who open the account, run-around etc. Think again if you still want to deal with this kind of service. Every personnel, every branch is a representative of the entire company.

I opened an account WITH THE MANAGER at Bank of the West in Sherman Oaks, CA., and the bank manager mis spelled my name ON THE SIGNATURE CARD.  She refused to change it, saying I HAD TO COME BACK THE NEXT DAY.  I said I will TRY but I was not sure.  She then said she would be off Thursday and Friday.  She gave me checks, deposits slips, everything.  FOUR DAYS LATER, I go to make a deposit, and the account is closed!  No one knows why.  No reason is given.  I ask where my CASH DESPOSIT money is?  No one knows.  They think I will get a cashier check but hey, that's a thought.  No notes are on the account.  NOW COMES THE KICKER!!!!  I wrote a check on one of the checks THE BANK MANAGER gave to me.  That is going to be stamped with CLOSED ACCOUNT, I assume.  Which means I have committed a felony!!!!!  Yet, BANK OF THE WEST still has my money to cover the check.  Is this a mess or what?!  Any ideas what I should do?  This is clearly a case or ruining my character as I have never bounced a check in my life!!!!  HELP?
