Bank of the West's Checking Account Bonus - Certain States Only

Bank of the West

Bank of the West has just started a new checking account promotion with a bonus of up to $100. In addition, the bank will donate $25 to local schools. You can also earn another $25 by opening a credit card with the checking account. I didn't include this in the total bonus since there are many credit card bonuses that are over $25.

Bonus Details are listed in this Bank of the West promotions page. The checking account must be opened by 4/27/2012.

If you decide to give this promotion a try, don't forget Bank of the West recently ended its free checking account (see review). The Easy Checking has a $8 monthly ($10 with paper statements) unless you meet one of three requirements.

To qualify for the full $125 requires the following:

  • $50 for establishing a direct deposit of at least $250 (two or more direct deposits that add up to $250 do not qualify). Direct deposit must be payroll, Social Security, pension or other government benefits. The first direct deposit must be posted to the account by 6/29/12.
  • $25 for using a new Bank of the West Debit Card for at least 10 point of sale purchases posted by 6/29/12.
  • $25 for enrolling in paperless statements through Online Banking, and still be enrolled, as of 6/29/12.
  • $25 for opening a new Bank of the West Credit Card account by 4/27/12 and making at least $25 in net purchases (purchases minus returns) posted by 6/29/12.

According to the small print, customers who received any bonus from the Bank between 9/1/10 through 3/16/12 are not eligible.

Many readers participated in Bank of the West's iPod touch promotion in 2010. Most reported receiving the iPod.

Regarding a hard credit pull, I was told in 2010 that they don't do a hard credit inquiry in the application (only a soft pull). So you shouldn't have to worry about a ding to your credit score (unless you apply for the credit card). However, ChexSystems could cause an issue. One reader reported in 2010 that it's their policy to deny applications when ChexSystems report more than 6 inquiries in the previous 6 months.

Account Availability

There's an online application, however, the small print states that Bank of the West products are offered to the residents of the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

I don't know if this matters to anyone: It's owned by BNP (Nat'l Bank of Paris) Paribas, world's largest bank and company, according to Bloomberg and Forbes.  Very strong and seemingly healthy outlook.

This bank will NOT pay you their promised bonus!

Look at all the previous threads about this problem here on this blog and other places like

They will weasel out!

They are arrogant and rude, to boot!

They'll pay the bonus, but unlike other banks you cannot have a zero account balance at the time. Read the fine print. I got the bonus last year.

I went to link  and signed up for a new account. They they did not honor the promotion as said I could only get that by going in to a branch. It says that no where! I would say this bank is a liar.
