Are You Addicted To Wealth?

Sunday, December 9, 2012 - 8:49 PM
I don't know that Philip Slater's Q&A test for Wealth addiction that
Scott Burns notes in this article really defines it:

"...Wealth addiction... You can test yourself with these simple

Are you a money addict?  ...
Are you a possession addict? ...
Are you a power addict? ...
Are you a fame addict? ...
Are you a spending addict? ..."

Nonetheless during this season of intense focus on consumerism, the
closing couple of paragraphs contain words and thoughts we all should
keep in mind:

"... Is there a First Step in overcoming wealth addiction? Yes.
Ignore the never-ending attention to wealth in our culture.
Instead, we can focus on the abundance most of us already have.
For as many as 80 percent of all Americans what we already have
is a life of material comfort and ease that is beyond anything
dreamed of a century ago; an abundance of possessions even at
modest income levels; and an ease of communication and
entertainment. All of this gives most of us a capacity to say
“enough,” a capacity that surpasses anything in previous world

No.  I am definitely NOT addicted to wealth.  I do not enjoy material possessions, spending or "fame?".  What I am addicted to is having enough money to pay for all the unexpected medical and other bills which come our way.  Rent, food, medical bills, car bills, etc. are my concern.  If I were alone in this world, I could be happy living in a cave cooking a rabbit over a fire for supper with just a cloth over my body.  However, I have a family and they do not want to live in a cave and they think rabbits are for pets and not food so my plight is cast!  I "must" manage to bring in enough money to provide them with what they need.  Woe is me!
