Money Smart Week, 4/20 - 4/27, Shred Day Events

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 8:16 PM
Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign designed to help
consumers better manage their personal finances. This is achieved
through the collaboration and coordinated effort of hundreds of
organizations across the country including businesses, financial
    institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, government
agencies and the media. These groups come together once a year to
stress the importance of financial literacy, inform consumers about
where they can get help and provide free educational seminars and
activities throughout the week. Programming is offered to all
demographics and income levels and covers all facets of personal
finance from establishing a budget to first time home buying to
estate planning. The effort was created by the Federal Reserve Bank
of Chicago in 2002. Money Smart Week partners will be hosting their
    events April 20 - 27, 2013.

One part of this campaign is that numerous financial institutions are
holding free Shred Day events: a chance to safely get rid old tax,
bank statement, etc documents.  You can click on the "Find An Event"
link to bring up a web page allowing you to generate a list of events
in your (zip code) community.  Even though I'm in a small (100,000)
population central Illinois community 2 Shred Day events are on the
calendar in the coming week; a third such event I know about is NOT
on their calendar, so you might also want to check your other local
resources.

Cumulus, thanks for posting this information about Shred Day events.  A local financial institutions typically has one around this time every year, and your post reminded me to confirm the date with them.  I was very happy to put it on my calendar after doing some major purging of records recently.  With a modest donation to a charitable organization, the contents of several boxes were shredded as I watched.  It saved me time, avoided wear and tear on the shredder in my home office, and reassured me that the items had been disposed of safely.
