Rising ATM Fees -- And How To Beat Them

A new government report confirms that bank customers are paying more to access their funds at these machines.

According to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report released this month, some customers are paying ATM fees as high as $5 per transaction. But banks may be inclined to argue that these fees aren't out of line, as the GAO report also indicates financial institutions are paying more to maintain ATMs and the revenue from these machines is declining.

1. Shop around, there are low-fee or even no-fee ATMs.

2. RCA accounts allow ATM fee refund if one meets monthly requirements.

Some reimbursements are limited to a certain dollar amount per month, so make 2 bigger withdrawals instead of 4 smaller ones per month.

Also explore the option of cashback from debit cards at the grocery store, etc. - in case of an RCA you can then immediately transfer some money electronically to replenish the RCA to the balance cap.
