Interesting article.  The debate of the century is on actively-managed funds or index funds.  I have no clear answer for that.  (1) One definitely want to subcribe to no-load funds.  (2) There are very few mutual funds that would beat index funds over a long period of time.  (3) it is true that one should always opt for index funds, then all the mutual fund industry would dissolve overnight.  

I would rather do my own research and come up with the portfolio that fits my time horizon and risk tolerance.  That has been working well for more than 30 years, there is no reason why it would not work for another 30 years.
