There are approximately 51 million unbanked or underbanked U.S. consumers in the country, but they may not be what or who you think. In fact, you may know one in your neighborhood, or even in your own household.

FactorTrust, an Atlanta-based financial services analytical firm, wants to highlight the problem. The firm is introducing a quarterly index that tracks the underbanked, with the idea that financial services firms should reach out to this demographic and help them organize their money.

For individuals without a bank account, check cashing stores and money lenders may be effective solutions for some transactions, but they won't be options when it comes to buying health insurance under the ACA
