The Federal Reserve says it’s winding down its quantitative easing program, but it makes no such claims for the regular kind of monetary easing, keeping short-term interest rates near zero.

Fed officials say short-term rates will stay low for months to come, and the challenges facing income-hungry investors are likely to linger, too.

The plain-vanilla vehicles that many investors use to generate income have been yielding pitifully little — and they provide scarce help in keeping pace with inflation, let alone building a stockpile of cash for the future.
