Update 11/01/08: The CD rates have changed. The 18-month yield has dropped to 4.35% APY. However, the 48-month CD yield has increased from 4.44% to 5.00% APY.
USA Federal Credit Union has a good deal on its 18-month share certificate. The yield is 4.50% APY with a minimum deposit of $1,000. It's also available in a Traditional IRA.
It has been a while since my last USA Federal post in 2007 when they were offering a special 7% 7-month CD.
Credit union membership is open to members of the Prime Meridian Association. People can join this association with a $10 membership fee. When I contacted this credit union in 2006, I was told that an association application can be requested from the credit union and can be included with the credit union application. You can be immediately eligible to join this credit union if you're an active or retired military. Please see their Become a Member Page for the full details. Membership into the credit union requires a $5 membership fee and a minimum opening savings deposit of $5.
Branches are located in San Diego and Riverside County, California and in Las Vegas, Nevada. It also has overseas branches in Japan and Korea. The credit union is part of CU Service Centers network. Cash and check deposits can be made into your savings or checking accounts through these shared branches. CDs can then be opened by phone and funded by transfering the money from the checking or savings into the CD.
Its financial ratings for soundness are mixed: 4 stars (excellent) at BauerFinancial and 2 stars (below peer group) at Bankrate.com
The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA. It has $692.8 million in assets and 59,785 members.
