Tip for anyone who wants to use NASA but has a CD maturing just after the end of the month (when the rate will change):

You are given 10 days to fund it after opening, which means if you open the CD on the last day of the month you will have until Aug 9 to actually fund it. (If you don't fund it, it will simply close without penalty). I know the fine print says money must be desposited from the 1st to the 31st of the month but it always says that, and at least in the past I've been able to open the CD at the very end of the month but actually bring the money in a week later without problem. Not guaranteed but it's worked before. And NASA is shared branch, so if you have a shared branch CU in your area you can make the deposit that way, then call NASA to have them transfer the hold on the deposit to the CD.

Too bad this isn't the August special... a lot of people here on DA will have previous specials from various CUs maturing the end of August.

keep in mind that these decent rates require "new" money.
Whatever that means?

"New money" means funds that you can't have already on deposit with NASA FCU, in another account. The funds have to be transferred in from another FI.

For a CU opening a CD on their website is an incredibly smooth process---You can even establish your choice of maturity designation immediately upon opening---One thing as a note is that they operate on EST and for me In PST it means I have to open the account before 2pm---After that a drop down says, " Ineligible account type "---But really what it is saying is our offices are clossed.

YMMV. So I was able to open new CD's today at the 9 month new money rate from existing funds in my share account. I had a few CD's mature at NASA and was preparing to transfer money in for the higher rate and transfer out the matured funds. Using their website I was able to open new CD's from the existing funds on deposit. I followed up with a call to NASA and the CSR said "Must be a glitch in the system" and further confirmed the CD was opened at the 4.59% new money rate.
I have in the past called and requested to rollover a CD at the new money rate, they have put me on hold then coming back to say "OK". NASA has been great to work with and seem to lean to the members request.

Now if only they could close without penalty, a CD maturing in August in order to open a July special... ;)

One more obscure NASA tip: if you're waiting until the last possible day of the month to "open" an "unfunded" CD (to have the most possible days into the next month to "fund" it) and don't have the money at NASA yet: you can't open it online, since you can only do it online if you already have the money at NASA. You need to speak to a CSR to open it up "unfunded" (and are given 10 days to fund it). But if the end of the month is a weekend, the CSRs who answer on Saturdays cannot open CDs themselves (they are overflow staff). They can take your name and have someone "call you back on Monday", but by then the month will be over and it'll be too late. If you ever find yourself in this situation (say your funds won't be available elsewhere until the 8th or 9th so you need to open it unfunded as late in the month as you can), the workaround is to call one of the actual NASA branches and speak to someone at the branch. They CAN open an unfunded CD on a Saturday. The problem is, NASA doesn't publish their branch phone #s and the Saturday (800) CSRs can't transfer calls to the branches. But if you do some good internet sleuthing you can indeed find the direct phone #s for a couple of NASA's branches. I actually saw this tip posted somewhere once, and it worked when I needed it to. Once, when the last day of the month was a Saturday, I called the (800) CSRs and was indeed told they couldn't open CDs, and could only send a message to have someone call me back on Monday (too late). But through some creative sleuthing, I managed to find a branch phone number, called them up (some are open half-day on Saturdays, EST), and they were able to open my unfunded CD. I then had 10 days to fund it.
