5 Year IRA Rate Trend

5-Year IRA CD

What is an IRA CD?

IRA CD is an acronym for Individual Retirement Account Certificate of Deposit. Though a mouthful, this financial product could be a very useful component of a retirement investing strategy. The basic way to think of an IRA CD is to picture a CD cloaked inside of an IRA. The CD part is the agreement you make with a bank or credit union to deposit funds with them for a fixed period of time, and the IRA part serves as a tax shield or benefit that allows you to deduct the account principal from your taxes.

CD Strategy

The 5-Year IRA CD is still a time deposit that gains interest, like most other CD offerings. You can use it as the last rung on a CD ladder to reach for yield, and you could even mix CDs in that don’t have an IRA feature. The basic way to build a CD ladder is to buy multiple CDs or IRA CDs in a sequence of maturity periods, starting with a 1-year term and capping it with a 5-year term, for example. Laddering allows you to take advantage of changing interest rate environments without incurring early withdrawal penalties (by reserving the ability to reinvest CD funds every year), as well as keeps some funds liquid for use in the near future.

Types of IRAs

The IRA part of the CD means that, in order to reap the tax benefits, you must abide by the typical rules that govern the various retirement accounts. As you can see in the 5-Year IRA CD rate table above, there are offerings that cover the basic types of retirement accounts: Traditional, Roth, SEP (Simplified Employee Pension), CESA (Coverdell Education Savings Account). SEP IRA rules differ from Simple IRA rules and are not the same product. A Roth IRA 5-Year CD could be more beneficial than a Traditional IRA 5-Year CD, as far as liquidity, because the Roth IRA allows you to withdraw contributions at any time and for any reason. Use a Roth IRA calculator to determine whether it makes sense given your situation.

Contribution & Tax Rules

IRA contribution rules are set by the IRS each year and apply in the same way they would if you had an IRA without the CD. In most cases, you are not able to contribute additional funds to an open IRA CD, but you are able to have multiple open at the same time. The tax rules vary with each type of IRA, and you should speak with a tax professional before opening one to help maximize the benefit.

5-Year IRA CD rates, also known in the credit union world as 60 Month IRA Share Certificate rates, are usually similar to standard CD rates. Roth 5-Year IRA CD rates and Traditional 5-Year CD rates are the most common you will find in the rate table above.
