Latest Wachovia Certificate of Deposit Promotions

Wachovia has been offering some nice promotional rates on short-term CDs in the last few months. These have varied by state are are never listed at Wachovia's website. A reader just mentioned seeing a 5.61% APY 8-month CD advertised with a $5,000 minimum. I called Wachovia for further details. For California, I was told of a 5.45% APY 10-month CD special. In Texas and Florida, the special was a 5.40% APY 7-month CD. All have a $5,000 minimum deposit requirement and did not require a checking account. Wachovia's $50 checking account promotion is nearing an end. The current expiration date is 4/24/07 for the free checking account and 4/30/07 for the student checking account (see post). For those in California, you can get up to $125 bonus for the free checking account. This doesn't expire until 6/24/07 (see post).

A reader just left the following information regarding the 5.61% Wachovia CD:
update: I found the newspaper about Wachovia.
Irvine World News, News page 13:
5.61% APY 8-month CD $5,000 minimum.
Visit the Wachovia branch at Walnut Village Center (949)726-8598 or University Park Center (949)857-1762.
Both are in Irvine, CA.

I just called the Walnut Village branch, which is about 1 mile from here. They confirmed the special rate, but didn't know how long it would last. I have a CD at World maturing next Monday, and I'll probably move it over there if I don't find anything better. Or I'l see if World will match it.

I had a CD that matured today at World. They were willing to match Wachovia's 5.61 APY for 8 months, but they wouldn't do the $75-$150 bonus on checking too. So I closed out the World account, and drove over to Wachovia in Walnut Village and opened it.
