5.25% 12-Month CD Promotion at Wachovia

Wachovia has a new CD promotion with a 5.25% APY and a 12 month term. The minimum deposit is $5,000, and it requires that you open or have a Wachovia checking account. This doesn't seem to be listed at Wachovia's website. A reader emailed me this info, and I just called 800-WACHOVIA for additional details. It's available at all of their branches. This seems to replace the special 5.41% 6-month CD that I reported on last week.
Update #2: I've just confirmed that the 5.41% 6-month CD special has been extended to October 9th. It has the same requirements as this 12-month CD. Thanks to the reader who notified me of this.
The 5.25% isn't the best rate, but now with the recent rate cuts, it's in the top 10 of my best 12-month CD rates.
Wachovia's free checking should qualify for this CD. It requires a $100 minimum opening balance, but it has no minimum balance after opening or monthly service fees.
Wachovia had been offering a $50 sign-up bonus for the free checking that had been scheduled to last through October, but the bonus is no longer being listed. They do have a $25 refer-a-friend bonus. When you refer someone to Wachovia, both of you will get a $25 Visa Gift Card.
Wachovia bank is FDIC insured (Certificate # 33869).

If you took advantage of the Wachovia $50 checking account bonus earlier in the year and have kept it open at a minimal level to avoid the closing fee for accounts open less than six months, you're probably approaching the time for closing it. Might be a good idea to leave it open just long enough to take advantage of the CD promotion.

I left you a comment about this CD a couple weeks ago BankGuy. The 6-mo 5.41 came out after this one and both of them end this week (at least in FL).

Thanks cyclone. I wonder if there may be different end dates in different regions. Seems like there's a lot of conflicting info on end dates.

Just verified with 800-WACHOVIA that the 5.41% 6mth CD has been extended to 5/9/07. Can apply at local branch or via 800-WACHOVIA. Applicable to NYC, and most likely other cities since anyone else can call in. Please confirm for your own area.

World Savings still has a 8 months 5.41% and 13 months 5.25% CDs until Oct 11 in branch only. No checking account is required.
