$50 Checking Account Bonus at Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo Bank
Wells Fargo is offering a $50 bonus for opening a checking account. This isn't listed at Wells Fargo's website. After seeing it mentioned at this FW thread, I called Wells Fargo. The CSR checked into it, and confirmed that it is available at all of their branches. The Free Checking should qualify, and there is no direct deposit requirement for the bonus. The scheduled promotion end-date is 9/15/08.

According to the CSR, they do pull your credit report so this may be a hard credit inquiry. The minimum deposit to open the checking account is $100.

Even though Wells Fargo's Free Checking has no monthly service fees, the online bill pay is not free with this checking account. Also, there are no free checks, not even the first order. You can get free online bill pay and free checks with other Wells Fargo checking accounts, but you'll have to watch out for monthly fees.

Wells Fargo has branches mostly in the western states. Some of the states include Illinois, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California. The bank is FDIC insured (Certificate # 3511).

Past Wells Fargo Deals

I haven't done many Wells Fargo posts. Wells Fargo did offer a $50 checking account bonus last November in some states. It seems to be very rare to find any decent deposit rates at Wells Fargo. My last post for a competitive Wells Fargo CD was over two years ago.

Wells Fargo in the News

I just scanned for some recent news on Wells Fargo, and it appears they've had another breach of customers' personal data (see article). It doesn't appear to be a major breach. On the financial side, they seem to be holding up well in this credit crisis, although there are some doubts about if this can continue.

Last fall I received the $50 bonus without any trouble. I live in Texas. I don't know if they did a hard pull. No fees so far on my free checking account.
