Up to $150 Checking Bonus at Cal National Bank in Southern California

Cal National Bank is offering a bonus of up to $150 in gift cards for opening a free checking account and performing certain activities. The promotion is listed on the right side of the bank's checking page. There's also more info on this promotion in ad in yesterday's Orange County Register. The ad is available online here and here.

The promotion rewards points, and these can be used for travel, gift cards and merchandise. A maximum of 20,000 points can be earned in the first month:
  • 5,000 points with your first online bill payment or automatic payment from checking
  • 5,000 points when you sign up for direct deposit
  • Up to 10,000 points for Visa check card signature purchases in the first 30 days (1,000 points per purchase)
It appears 20,000 points can be worth about $150 in gift cards.

Branches are located in Southern California counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura and San Bernardino. The bank is a member FDIC (FDIC Certificate # 34659).

Thanks to the reader who mentioned this promotion in the finding deals post.

I called 8/28/08 - was told that acct. could be started (and ended if need be) without physically going into a branch. BUT, they required a California drivers license to be mailed or faxed - i.e., not available to non-Cal folks. Can anyone confirm or deny, based on talking with other CSRs?

I live in the state of Hawaii and started doing the application online. When I entered my personal information and proceeded to next page and entered my employer's info, I got the following info after hitting the submit button : Unfortunately this product is not available in your state.
