Update on Wachovia's Featured CDs and Money Market Promotion

Wachovia Bank
Update 8/09/08: These Featured CDs have been extended once again. According to the CSR, they should last at least through August 12, 2008.

Wachovia added a new 9-month term to its Featured CDs. The yield is 4.15% APY. I just called and confirmed the old rates are still in effect, and as you may expect, this promotion has been extended once again. According to the CSR, it's scheduled to end this Friday (8/8/08). Wachovia has extended these Featured CDs several times in the last couple of months, so I have no idea if this is just a marketing ploy or a real end date.

Wachovia Featured CD Rates as of 8/04/08:
(latest scheduled end date: 8/08/08)

Term APY
7-month 4.00%
9-month 4.15%
12-month 4.25%
18-month 4.40%
24-month 4.50%
36-month 5.00%
48-month 5.15%
60-month 5.25%

The minimum deposit is $5,000, and I was told that no checking account is required. They do require you to fund the CD with money outside of Wachovia. For more details about these CDs, please refer to my June post.

High Performance Money Market Account Promotion

Update 8/06/08: The MMA promo is back. Wachovia's website is again showing the 3.75% APY promo. As before I've only verified it for Texas and California.

Update 8/05/08: It appears this MMA promo has just ended. As of today, no high yields show up for any Texas or California zip codes.

Wachovia has increased the yield on its money market promotion from 3.50% to 3.75% APY. It's not available in all states. I've confirmed the 3.75% for Texas and California zip codes. The minimum deposit is $10,000. The rate goes way down for smaller balances.

To see all of my recent Wachovia posts including one describing a $75 checking bonus, please refer to this page.

Thanks to the reader who mentioned this new 9-month CD and MMA rate in the comments.

Other High Certificate of Deposit Rates

Please refer to my weekly CD rates list to find other high CD rates that are available nationwide. Some higher rates may be available but the banks may not allow out-of-state customers. To find the best local deals, please refer to my weekly local CD rates list.

Some high local CD rates include a 4.50% APY 6-month CD at Vineyard Bank in California (see post), a 4.60% APY 12-month CD at Freedom Bank in Florida (see post) and a 4.71% APY 18-month CD at American United Bank in Georgia (see post).

And for even more high CD rates, refer to my list of the best CD rate finding resources.

If you find a good bank deal, please leave a comment in my finding the best deals post. Note, links to the latest 5 comments are shown on top. Right below this is a link for comment submission.

Regarding Wachovia's Money Market Promotion:

Banking Guy, did Wachovia tell you that you can get the 3.75% yield for a guarantee of 90 days? If yes, at the end of 90 days, assuming they don't have that promotion anymore, the rate will drop to 1.34% yield (on a $100K balance).

The WaMu online savings rate is 3.75%, but they are not calling it a promotional rate. Yes, the WaMu rate can drop at any time.

What zippy did you use for Texas for the 3.75% MMA promo? Or, did you call to get the 3.75% quote? I used 75201 online, and received rates several points lower.

I personally have Wachovia Checking account that is link to Way2Save program that gives you 5% interest compounded daily and an extra bonus 5% at the end of the year. They give real good services, if anyone would like open an account with wachovia please use me as a referral. That way you receive a bonus $25 and I receive one as well, just call them and tell them "Alexander Lee" has referred you. If you need more info email me @

Wow, that looked like a one-day only promotion. I checked yesterday right after seeing Banking Guy's post, and Wachovia showed a 3.75% MM rate on their web page (with a Dallas-area ZIP, so 75201 should've worked also), but it's completely gone today.

Wachovia 3.75% APY on its Money Market account is back, at least on its web site. (August 5th, 6 p.m.)

3.75% is still available for Southern California today 8/15. I'm hoping it lasts another day or two. Has anyone tried opening it at a branch?
