Competitive CD and Reward Checking Rates at Northstar Bank of Texas - Local Only

POSTED ON BY

Northstar Bank of Texas

Northstar Bank of Texas has some good deals on its CDs. The most competitive one is the 7-month CD which has a 1.50% APY. Other competitive ones include a 1.75% APY 18-month CD and a 2.25% APY 36-month CD. Minimum deposit is $1,000. These rates are listed in the bank's rates page as of 8/04/2010.

The bank continues to offer an attractive high-yield reward checking account called Velocity Checking that pays 3.45% on balances up to $50K as of 8/04/2010. I first reported on this account in March 2009 when the yield was 4.51%. It has the typical reward checking requirements including 10 debit card purchases a month. For more details please see my Velocity reward checking review.

It appears that a branch visit is required to open an account. Branches are located in the northern parts of the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area in the cities of Denton, Argyle, Colleyville, Corinth, Grapevine, Krum, Lake Dallas, Lewisville and Pilot Point.

The bank's ratings for safety and soundness are fair: 3 stars (adequate) at BauerFinancial, 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com and an overall health score of 3 out of 5 at DepositAccounts.com (see our Northstar Bank of Texas reviews page). These ratings are based on 3/31/10 financial data. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1973 (FDIC Certificate # 20935).

One of the not so attractive things about this rewards checking account is the floating monthly qualification cycle dates. They do not fall on the same day each month, making it very easy to come up short on the minimum number of required debit transactions. It seems like a "gotch ya" by the bank so they only have to pay 0.1% and not reimburse your foreign ATM fees. (Source of information is from the Northstar Bank website on the Velocity Checking page, Qualifications tab.)
