$100 Checking Account Bonus at Northwest Savings Bank in FL, NY, PA, OH & MD - Update

Northwest Savings Bank

Northwest Savings Bank continues to offer a $100 bonus for opening a new checking account. Details of this offer are listed in the bank's promotions page as of 5/30/2011. Some important details include:

  • $100 minimum opening deposit
  • To qualify, customers must initiate a monthly direct deposit of $100 or more
  • The Direct Deposit must be made by an employer or outside agency. Transfer from one account to another or deposit made at branch or ATM do not qualify as Direct Deposits
  • Switch Rewards, Switch Free, or Switch Interest Checking Account qualify
  • $100 credit will be posted to the account within 7 days of the first verified Direct Deposit
  • $100 credit is subject to a 1099 reporting

A reader in a 2009 Northwest Savings post mentioned that his $100 opening deposit triggered the bonus. So a real direct deposit may not be required. As usual your miles may vary.

Here's a summary of the checking accounts. The GO! Rewards Checking is a free checking account. It's not a high-yield reward checking account. The rewards are based on the amount you spend with the debit card. Another perk with this account is that you earn 10,000 points when you open the account. However, as a reader mentioned in my previous post, it can take almost 22,000 points to qualify for a $50 gift card. So this perk isn't that great. Another downside is the potential fee for online bill pay. This can be waived if you pay at least one bill per month.

Refer-a-Friend Deal

The sign-up bonus can be greatly improved if you are able to refer friends. You can earn $50 for each friend who opens a qualifying account without a limit. The bank's promotion page doesn't mention family members but I don't see any mention that family members can't be included. I guess there could be an issue for family members who live at the same house. The small print does state that Northwest reserves the right to disqualify referrals.

There's an additional small perk when you refer 5 or more friends. According to the bank's invite friends page, "invite 5 or more friends and get a FREE $10 Apple iTunes Gift Card.".

Only for Those in Certain Areas of FL, MD, NY, OH & PA

There's an online application link at the promotion page. However, on the first page of the application it states:

All residents of the United States that are within the Northwest market area are welcome to apply for an account.

Northwest Savings Bank branches are located in parts of Florida, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Note, when I entered in a South Florida zip code in the online application, I was rejected. So if you live in South Florida, you may have to visit one of their branches in Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale or Plantation. Some of the major cities with branches in the Northeast states include Baltimore, Buffalo, Rochester, Erie and Pittsburgh.

Northwest Savings Bank Overview

The bank used to offer some competitive CD rates, but that is no longer the case. It's a sizable bank with $8.16 billion in assets. The bank has an overall health score at of 4 stars (out of 5) with a Texas Ratio of 14.26% (above average). Please refer to our financial overview of Northwest Savings Bank for more details. I think they are pretty strict in their definition of "market area". I live about 30 miles from a branch, but I tried to apply on line for the account last year when this bonus was first offered. My application was rejected because they "could not verify my identity" but they said I could come into a branch to try to sort it out. It did not sound like there was any guarantee the branch would open the account for me - I had a feeling that if I did bother going to the branch they would tell me that I lived too far away - so I didn't waste the time.

If you had an account with them in the last year (12mo), you will be rejected.

Last year my parents did this deal when came to visit.  They live 150 miles from the nearest branch and they both received the bonus and I got two $50 referrals

Not valid in all parts of New York State; I live in Albany and was rejected.

Anon 3, they were able to open an account without living in the area? I wonder if I should try to drive to the nearest branch, its about an hour's drive from me.

Anyone want to give me a referral if I'm able to open the account? You can email me at the address in the name field; just replace the (numbers) with 213.

I opened this account last year, and referred 5 people. All bonuses were given without any hassle. I gave $25 to each referee, but It turned out I had to pay $7.5 tax per referal, so I only got $17.5 for each referal.    NSW debit card allows you to withdraw cash with no fee at many ATM locations. So I decided to keep this account for several years.
