$150 Checking Account Promotion at NuVision Federal in SoCal - Local Only

NuVision Credit Union

NuVision Federal Credit Union has another $150 checking account promotion. It has been over two years since my last report on one of these. This new one is advertised on the credit union's home page. The details are listed in this NuVision promotions page as of 5/25/2012.

The first $50 requires that you open a free checking account and establish direct deposit of at least $200 within the first 90 days. Also, eStatements must be established and maintained.

The second $50 requires that you keep the checking account active by having a minimum of 5 signature-based debit card purchases per month for the first 3 months.

The third $50 requires setting up online bill pay and making at least 3 bill payments per month for the first 3 months.

Some of the important details in the small print include:

Limit one (1) of each offer per member. Limited to new NuVision checking accounts only. Existing NuVision checking account members and members who have ever had a NuVision checking are not eligible.

Also in the small print it states who is eligible for this offer:

Checking promotional offer valid only for Southern California residents within ZIP codes 90000-93591 and Arizona residents within ZIP codes 85117–85299. [...] Must visit a NuVision Branch to redeem rewards.

Please refer to the credit union's promotions page for the full details.

Free Checking

Minimum to open a Free Checking account and obtain this offer is $100. The free checking account has some features that can make it a good account for the long-term. NuVision Federal Free Checking has no minimum balance requirements. The first order of 150 NuVision Federal Checks are free. The credit union is a member of the CO-OP ATM network which gives NuVision members free access to ATMs nationwide.

NuVision Federal Membership

According to the credit union's "Am I Eligible" page:

If you do not qualify based on the above criteria, no problem! At the same time we open your membership at NuVision, we will enroll you in the American Consumer Council (ACC) at no initial cost to you. NuVision handles everything so you can start earning the benefits of NuVision membership right away.

Membership requires a $5 minimum balance in the Primary Savings account.

Even though anyone can qualify for membership, don't forget this checking account promotion is limited to "Southern California residents within ZIP codes 90000-93591 and Arizona residents within ZIP codes 85117–85299."

Branch Locations

NuVision Federal branches are located throughout the Los Angeles metro area. There's also a branch in Mesa, Arizona, but it's only accessible to Boeing employees.

The credit union is part of the shared branch network CU Service Centers which allows you to conduct many banking transactions from other credit unions around the nation that are also part of this network.

How great you keep finding offers for SoCal, since it's such a tight market.

I was able to chat online w/them for some clarification (after waiting close to 10 min. on the phone, which I advised the csr to pass on for improvement, since they fell short on that test.)

A) First $50 automatically deposited but on hold 90 days (then debited if promo requirements are not fulfilled). Next two $50 rewards require redeeming with a branch visit after their 90-day fulfillment.

B) Opening an acct at a branch is immediate (debit card issued on the spot), needing only valid ID (DL) besides giving personal info (ssn, etc). Applying online is not active til they receive the signature card back - they send it to be signed electronically - plus need copy of ID faxed.

C) Chex Systems verification and only soft pull on credit.

D) Various branches in Orange County (being based in Huntington Beach), but for L.A. it's mainly Downtown inside the Gas Co. Tower (w/parking$ & accessibility inconvenient) or the branches in Montery Park & East L.A. (stand-alone bldgs in L.A. suburbs.)

E) Member bonus $25 per referral. Form available online or in branch.

Does ACH qualify as direct deposit (payroll is difficult for self-employed)?
