In the good old days, it was easy to find reward checking accounts paying over 4% for balances up to $25K. Those days are over. In today's environment, if you can find 2% for balances up to $25K, you should consider yourself lucky. CBC National Bank should help more people have access to this type of reward checking account. Its reward checking account is called Advantage Checking, and it has the following rates and features as of 11/13/2012:
- 2.00% APY for up to $25,000
- 0.36% to 2.00% APY for balances over $25,000
- No interest paid if requirements are not met
- Rebates of up to 3 ATM fees per calendar month
Monthly requirements include:
- 10 debit card purchases
- direct deposit (ACH) credit of at least $200 from any unrelated third party each statement cycle
- Active enrollment in e-Statements
This is a free checking account with no monthly service fees and no minimum balance requirement. More details of this Advantage Checking account are available at the bank's checking comparison page.
There's a link to an online application at the bottom of the bank's checking comparison page. You must be a resident of Florida, Georgia or South Carolina to be able to open an account via the online application. I was told that you must sign a signature card before you are able to get checks.
CBC National Bank branches are located in Fernandina Beach, FL; Meigs, GA; and Port Royal and Beaufort, SC. CBC National Bank has partnered with the Allpoint ATM network which gives CBC customers unlimited fee-free access to over 50,000 ATMs worldwide.
The bank has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 4 stars (out of 5) with a Texas ratio of 62.54% (below average) based on June 2012 data. Please refer to our financial overview of CBC National Bank for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 2000 (FDIC Certificate # 35309).
How This Reward Checking Compares
As I mentioned above, it's hard to find reward checking accounts with rates over 2% and balance caps of at least $25K. For reward checking accounts that are nationally available, there are only two. One is from ABCO Federal Credit Union which offers 2.12% APY for up to $25K, and the other is from Provident Credit Union which offers 2.01% APY for up to $25K. Both of these are all-access credit unions that make it easy for anyone in the nation to qualify for credit union membership.
You can sometimes find better local deals. For those who live in the Orlando Florida metro area, Old Florida National Bank is still offering 3.04% APY for up to $25K. For those who live in Greenville County, South Carolina, Greenville Heritage Credit Union is still offering 2.78% APY for up to $25K.
The above rates are accurate as of 11/13/2012. As we have seen many times, both the rates and the balance caps can fall. So please check with the bank or credit union for the latest rates.
