Great Bank, Wonderful People, Just A Couple Of Caveats

Posted by: |

This is a great little hometown bank with really nice people - I've had several interactions with them and they really are a breath of fresh air! The interest rate listed for their Reward Checking account (eAccess Checking) is for real. The rate has been stable and consistent now for the last several years and the account terms are plain and transparent. All that being said, however, there are a few things that you will need to be aware of:

1.) As of my writing this, there are major issues with their online application process. You get error messages that suggest the application process didn't work but as it turns out, sometimes it does - not very encouraging when you're trying to send sensitive information like Social Security Number over the wire. For this reason, I'd advise you to avoid applying online and either call them on the phone or stop by in person to get more information or to apply for an account.

2.) It may take them a while to get back with you. It was several days after my (surprisingly) successful online application before I heard anything back. If you call, you can probably avoid this delay.

3.) Even though the account is called "e-Access" and you do have to access your account online to get the Interest benefits,  you still have to be onsite to open the account. It wasn't a problem for me - just a quick little road trip - but if you're not within driving distance then this probably isn't the account for you.

All that being said, I love these folks and highly recommend them but only if you're local or willing to travel.

Don't Bother To Apply

I have opened about 15 accounts over the past 5 years in states ranging from Nebraska to New York following high yeild interst rates. I attempted three times since 15 Aug 2012  to open an account with the First National Bank of Atmore, Alabama.

I waited until the advertised upgrade of the web interface before trying to open an account. After the upgrade, the on-line application is very limited - only collecting contact info, SSN, and a relative not living with you. Some institutions such as Pen Fed have fully automated open an account application that includes ACHing the initial deposit.

The first time, I submitted the online pdf form and in severral days I received a voicemail. I returned the call and left a voicemail. Then NOTHING.

After two weeks, I submitted another online pdf form. After 3 working days, I called the bank and was asked the state I live in. When I answered Alabama, I was asked what part of the state. After I answered, I was put on hold to wait for a customer service person and after 15 minutes disconnectted.

My interpretation, First National Bank of Atmore, Alabama does not want my business.
