I have only positive things to say about Heritage Family Credit Union. I use their location in Rutland, Vermont regularly. The bank provides a lot of great services, but their best quality by far....the top notch customer service. I remember a specific issue I had a few years ago where I accidentally overdrew one of my checking accounts. I called up Heritage and they were very helpful as far as resolving the issue. They even gave re-funded me the fee out of the kindness of their heart. They certainly did not need to do that. Further, they helped me set up my accounts so I would not have similar issue in the future. The customer service is always excellent. I've dealt with several departments at the bank including the loan department, and they have always been very helpful. The only downside, which I do feel has to be mentioned, is that the bank does not have the same technology as other larger banks. The mobile/web experience is only average. But, to me, that is a small price to pay. Overall, I highly recommend the bank.
I love Heritage Family as a bank. Good interest rates and interest on checking accounts, easy online banking system, and as a shared branch of the credit union network I can access my accounts in-person at all sorts of other credit unions around the country, as well as surcharge-free ATMs. It's about as convenient as having a branch availablein anywhere you may go domestically, but not always as nearby as a big bank in a big city. HFCU charges $1 for most non-HFCU ATM transactions (in addition to any ATM's own surcharge), which is a slight irritant, but Chase and other banks often do $2. Far more so than competitors, HFCU is honest, straightforward, actually looking out for you as a member and your interests individually, and legitimately fair in their policies. In a decade of banking with them, I've never once felt as if I was getting the short end of some deal, say being charged a fee for something silly or trivial. They are the friendly neighborhood dream bank in It's a Wonderful Life. They handle me well, they handle my money well, and they make it easy and convenient for me to do what I need with it when and where I want to.
They don't always have the most advanced conveniences, like depositing a check from a picture message. For me, those advancements are great, but not worth the tradeoff in service and bank culture. I love it and highly recommend it.
I've been a client with them for a few years. They're pretty incompetent. Not inclusive I've had these problems:
Inconsistent application of fee schedules.
Changes to my CCs with them, with them only telling me after the fact.
Inconsistent and slow processing of transactions and holds.
Tellers and managers not having consistent information about their products and services. With one time a teller giving me a phone number to cardholder services, and they gave me the number to an AD/scam hotline instead!
Their call center hours are consistently horrible, if you work 9-5, you're out of luck. Also their staffing is pretty skimpy, wait times of 15-20 minutes to get a human are commonplace.
They also don't empower their employees. In order to get anything done you pretty much need to talk directly to a manager or a branch manager.
If you like headaches and unpleasant surprises, this is the credit union for you.
I'm fairly new to Vermont from Arizona and starting banking with HFCU which ended up being a big mistake! A few days ago, I went into their Allen Street branch to work with a banker to wire money to my Fidelity investment account. About an hour after the banker processed the wire, I got a call from her telling me that my wire had been cancelled and my money was "on hold" for 10 days. Being confused and frustrated, I had a phone conversation with the CEO, Matt. He was extremely arrogant and condescending and in his own words, he profiled me as a scammer. In my 63 years, I've never been in trouble with the law with the exception of a few traffic tickets. I went to VSECU and opened accounts there. they treated me like an important and valued customer. As soon as my money is available for withdraw, I will be closing my Heritage accounts and moving my money to VSECU. As is said, a fish rots from the head down. Such is the case with HFCU CEO, Matt who is the head. I actually feel sorry for the employees that have to work for such a vile man.
These people are quite possibly the ABSOLUTE WORST bank EVER. They DON'T care about providing a service. They DON'T care about the people who trust them with their money. WHY are the in business ??
