I enjoyed banking with this local credit union. I have had their rewards checking program and earn 4.5% since September. I have no trouble using a debit card 12 times each month.
River Valley Credit Union is no longer insured by NCUA.
Everything was just fine before the update now I'm extremely limited on transfers and withdrawals it's made managing my money incredibly difficult unlike before the update. In my opinion this is now the worst bank to have holding your money.
This financial institution (and I use that term loosely) is the pits, and I feel I've earned the right to say this as I was a member there for 33 years. Unforturnately, over the course of the last 5-7 years, I witnessed the decline; not only in customer service, but the credit union is steadfast with regard to becoming a BANK. Fees are charged for absolutely everything. Members who need new ATM cards due to wear after 15+ years are charged a nice sum, which seems absolutely ridiculous when they won't work anymore. The branch manager does not understand regulatory compliance, and what finally put me over the edge was when I was told I needed an EIN and minutes from our meetings for a CLASS REUNION account which we could filter payments through in order to pay for our party. A class reunion group doesn't qualify as a non-profit, and isn't registered for federal/state/local income tax purposes. Our conversation was laughable, because I'm an accountant...and the manager wasn't quite sure what to say after I informed her of the facts. The only thing that was easy was pulling my money from the credit union, going down the street to 5/3 Bank, receiving $150 for opening a new account with direct deposit, and having the class reunion account opened with not a single issue. River Valley makes things in general VERY difficult for its members. One would think online banking should now be the easiest of all functionality, but if you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, you are unable to log in to view your accounts and activity. After calling the credit union to report the issue, you are told, "yeahhhhh, uhh you can't use that. I think you have to use something else," (I figured out on my own that means a new web browser). All jokes aside, you MUST download Mozilla or another browser to utilize the River Valley online banking software as of April 2013.
Bottom line, I feel members in a credit union should be treated even better than at a regular bank, however the treatment I've received (as well as my family members who have banked there) has been horrid...and is getting worse. I have nearly perfect credit, a fantastic job, and was offered TERRIBLE rates for all types of loans there. I do my homework, especially when it comes to my financial security, and to this day cannot believe other financial institutions offered me better mortgage and auto loans than did my own credit union. Just a terrible place to keep your money, so save yourself a few headaches and check in to other places. It will be worth your while, guaranteed. Thanks for reading and good luck!
