Top CD Rates in Southeast Texas at Suntide Credit Union

If you’re a saver who lives in the Corpus Christi area of Texas, you should consider yourself lucky. You have lots of great deposit deals in your area. Some new deals that I just came across are from Suntide Credit Union. The credit union is offering very competitive rates on its CDs and its share savings account. The CDs include a 2.35% 2-year CD, a 2.00% 1-year CD and a 1.50% 6-month CD. The top savings account rate is 1.25% for balances from $50,000 to under $100,000. The second tier rate is 1.00% for balances from $25,000 to under $50,000. These rates are listed in the credit union’s investments page as of 8/6/2013. These rates are subject to change without notice.

Membership into Suntide Credit Union is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Corpus Christi and San Patricio County, Texas. Please refer to the credit union’s accounts page for more details.

Suntide Credit Union branches are located in Corpus Christi and Sinton.

The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 68626.)

How These CD Rates Compare

As I mentioned above, Corpus Christi residents have many great deposit deals available to them. Navy Army Community Credit Union offers a 2.30% APY 30-month CD and one of the best reward checking accounts in the nation with top yield of 3.51% for balances up to $25,000.

Another credit union with top CD rates in the Corpus Christi area is Gulf Coast Credit Union. Some of its best deals include a 2.02% APY 3-year CD and a 1.50% APY 1-year CD.

These rates are much higher than what you can get in other states. The highest 24-month CD rate that's nationally available is 1.30% APY at Connexus Credit Union. However, this requires an active checking account with direct deposit. The highest without a checking requirement is 1.25% APY at Salem Five Direct.

The highest 12-month CD rate that's nationally available is 1.16% APY at State Bank of India - Chicago, but this has to be opened by mail if you don’t live near a branch. Connexus Credit Union is close behind with a 1.10% APY 12-month CD, but like the 24-month CD, this requires an active checking account with direct deposit. The highest at an internet bank is 1.05% APY. This is available from a few internet banks including GE Capital Bank and DollarSavingsDirect.

The above rates are accurate as of 8/6/2013.

Is it just local competition that is driving deposit rates higher in the Corpus Christi area of Texas? I'd like to see an interview with one of the managers of the credit unions mentioned in Ken's post regarding how they are paying these higher rates.

There is a much higher demand for loans in the Texas Gulf Coast. Hisher demand has resulted in higher demand for deposits, and higher interest rates.
