Bank and Credit Card Cash Back Deals for the Holiday Season


Happy Thanksgiving! With Thanksgiving marking the start of the holiday shopping season, I thought it would be useful to post on some discount and cash back deals from banks and credit card companies.

Visa Online Shopping Discounts: link, examples: $5 off on $50 at, $25 off on $300 at

Discover Card Promotion: link, Receive a $20 Discover Gift Card for every $200 you spend on your Discover Card at over 160 participating malls nationwide.

American Express Walmart promotion: link, Spend $40 or more two times at Walmart Stores or through 12/18/08 and get a $20 statement credit on your card account. Update: More details and limitations described here.

PayPal Holiday Promotion: link, Cash Back and Free Shipping from Major Retailers as well as eBay Deals (cash back begins 12/01/08)

Bank of America Mall: link, discounts from online retailers, you must have either a Bank of America checking account with a Check Card or a Bank of America credit card and be enrolled in Online Banking. Examples of discounts: 4% off from Target, Staples, TigerDirect; 3% off from Kmart, Sears; 2% off from Walmart, Apple Store.

Simple Cash Back: If you want to keep it simple with cash back credit cards, I recommend PenFed's Visa Platinum Gas Cash Reward credit card. It offers 5% cash back on gas purchases paid at the pump, 2% cash back on supermarket purchases and 1.25% cash back on all other purchases (see post).

Re the walmart offer, I tried to find this offer myself on the American Express website to no avail. The offer seems suspicious because it asks for way too much information. Where did you get this?

I have a Blue Cash card from American Express, which pays 5% back on purchases from gas stations, groceries and drug stores, plus 1.5% back on everything else.

Re: the Walmart offer. I too was skeptical. I contacted Amex after logging in to my account. They verified that it was TRUE:

before making the qualifying purchases. You must make two purchases between November 18, 2008 and December 18, 2008 in order to redeem the statement credit associated with this offer. The transactions must be $40.00 or more and on the same American Express Card in order to redeem the statement credit associated with this offer. The maximum savings available is $20.00 per Card account.

To redeem this offer, you must do the following:
1. Enroll their American Express Card at
