Mutual Savings Bank Vs Credit Union

What is the difference between a mutual savings bank that is owned by it's members and a credit union? Is there any reason to go with one over the other?

Back in my day they used to also call them Homesteads but seemed to have dropped that label in a lot of cities. I think they are the same as Mutual Savings Banks now.
