Was CD Cashed?

I have an original CD, but the bank says it was cashed in 2005 and paid by MoneyGram. They say they do not keep records that old. I started calling about this 12/4/19. I tried MoneyGram's site but found no way to check there. Is there a way I can find out about this other than the bank and MoneyGram?

If this is your CD, check your tax records for the 1099-INT statements from the bank for 2004/2005/2006 to see when/if they stopped. Of course your records may not go back that far just like the banks. If it belongs to a deceased relative be aware that they did not have to turn in the original CD paperwork to cash it out. Your question comes up a couple of times a year, usually from someone cleaning out a relatives paperwork and thinking that they've hit gold. I had CD certificates going back to the 80's that I just shredded last year after checking my Quicken records to see what happened to them if I could not remember. I don't want my kids to be stressed out finding old records after I'm gone and trying to track down funds that were either cashed out or reinvested. I never turned in the original CD to the bank when they matured, just called them with instructions.
Sorry, this is probably not what you wanted to hear.

Well, about all I can suggest is to ask the bank to whom it was paid, and at what address. And any MoneyGram transaction identity number. Sinc ethey had a record saying it was paid and via MoneyGram (I can't imagine why MoneyGram), they must have the MoneyGram transaction identifier and address to which is was sent.

You haven't said, is this a CD in your name? Did you lose track of it? You haven't said which bank either.

Thank you for your comments. The bank couldn't give me a name, but I didn't think to ask for an address or MoneyGram transaction identity number. I know nothing about MoneyGram, but also cannot imagine why a financial institution wouldn't use a their own cashier's check for paying anything. I will be calling them again and asking for this further info. Thanks again!!
