Issue With CPA Fees

Hi,

I'm am a small business owner. Finish filling 2021 tax returns. Got a invoice from CPA for $2500. Last year paid $1500 for the same work. During entire last year never once mention raising price and suddenly this year hit with $2500 bill. Had a brief conversation. His explanation is everything is going up that's why he is raising his price too. I can understand the prices have gone up but not like the way he has billed. No contract or retainer signed with CPA

He is threatening me to report to collection if I paid anything less than $2500.

Any advice or suggestions on how to handle the issue? Any organization or govt. agency to file the complain?

Again thanks in advance to everyone.

If there is no contract, neither you nor the CPA can enforce it legally.
If the work done by the CPA was not much different from the work done in the prior year, consider filing a complaint with your state’s Board of Accountancy for grossly overcharging as a violation of professional ethics. Also consider filing a complaint for violation of ethics with the AICPA (American Society of CPAs).

Please tell us why there is a possibility of no contract when the tax info was provided to CPA and a return was filed? Volunteer?

Get some other local estimates for comparable work. If close, pay and move on. If not, use estimates to negotiate the charge. If not negotiable, dispute the charge with whomever, and go to small claims if necessary.

From an online search I keep seeing... "Neither the Board nor any other state or federal agency has the authority to regulate fees."

It looks like CPA's are free to charge as they please. Public shaming seems to work wonders, as it can impact his future business.
