My husband died a few months ago and left me his ira with wells fargo. I received a letter from IRS saying I need to take RMD by 12-31-2023. I called number on last w. f. statement. Was given estate processing number and kept calling and getting NO paperwork as promised. Went to a a Branch here in Memphis. The woman was very helpful, then she "ghosted" me. Help! Do I need to get an attorney or what?

Thanks, Barbara

Simply go in person early in the day with the letter, a copy (certified) of the death certificate, a statement copy (ies) if available and several forms of ID for yourself. Ask to speak to a manager and get this done. Should take no more than an hour to process.

You can probably only make an appointment at branch. All the closures have put strain on open branches now

Ok I had similar when my mom died. No one wants to deal with these. Terrible product . Fidelity will transfer it for you and help u setup auto distributions. They will work it for you. At least call them and discuss. No charge to you. Hope it helps. Mine is working fine since there help. No one is trained on these at the branches anymore

If your husband did not take an RMD in 2023 then the RMD will need to be taken by the end of 2023. You first need to check with WF to see if the 2023 RMD was already taken or not.

If you are the POD beneficiary on the WF IRA account, then as others have said you should be able to get WF to get the account in your name in short order. Otherwise, it may take some time. One way or the other, the RMD must be taken this year.

Well I really want to be sure of a few things. Do you have the paperwork showing you as payable upon death or transfer on death? Hang on to it for sure. Do you have his death certificate? Hang on to it. who will be helping you with your estate taxes? Who will help you with the taxes for the last year your husband was living? I have not faced your situation, but did go through my mother’s death.
