When we think of the once-mythical American Express black card, we tend to conjure images of the most fabulously wealthy people in the world plunking one down on the counter to pay for items that cost more than most Americans earn in a year – or possibly even in a decadeThe American Express "black" is actually the American Express Centurion Black card and that image is not a terribly far cry from reality...

Thanks but I don't think I'll be applying - to quote the unforgettable Maxwell Smart:  "Missed (the net worth requirements) by thaaaat much".

Besides, I don't see a mention of a reward program with points redeemable for gift certificates to Landry's, Outback, and Walmart ;)

Seems strange to want a card that includes so much waste.  But it appears the status of the ability to waste and the desire to be showy are a part of the appeal.

As Rhett, I would say, " And that's what all this is; sheer waste..."

The only situation that a Black Card may be slightly useful is when people like Oprah Winfrey faced at the Zurich store this month and that she could have just flashed her black card and said, "Do you know who I am??":D (with only humorous intent; not meant to discuss this controversial topic at all).

Would not want one if I qualified. Why would you flaunt your wealth?

I don't think it's a matter of flaunting one's wealth.  It's just that wealthy people get to have things the rest of us don't.  What's the good of wealth if we can't buy gorgeous things with it?  Elizabeth Taylor comes to mine with some of the jewelry she was famous for.  It was a part of who she was and she seemed to love being known for it all.  I wouldn't like to change places with her because she also is known for all the medical problems she ended up with.  So life doesn't always give us the "good" things.  It comes with a mixed plate and not all of it is what we may want.

Coutts & Co. World Card : For roughly $700 annually (waived if more than $100,000 is charged in one year), the Coutts card gives customers the chance to live like a queen. In fact, Queen Elizabeth II is a Coutts client. The concierge and assistance center is a major perk, offering everything from help chartering a yacht at the last minute to hiring a governess.
