One of the best-kept secrets among retirees. Despite California's horrific marginal tax rate on high earners, folks drawing Social Security get off scot-free. As in zero state income tax on Social Security. No means test, nada.

Then there's Prop 13.

Lou, before my Mom died, I helped her fill out her tax forms. I was always amazed "low-tax-Kansas" (where she resided) imposed state income taxes on her Social Security benefits.

I live in Michigan. For single taxpayers born before 1946 there are no taxes on SS, no taxes on pensions up to $49,861, up to $11,115 interest, RMD's and conversions. This year I paid $165. I try to get my income and conversions as high as I can without going over the limit for higher Medicare premiums. These figures are doubled for joint filing.
