Fewer than 4 out of 10 adults in the United States got flu shots last winter, the lowest rate in seven seasons and one likely reason why the 2017-18 season was the deadliest in decades.

Reports released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide new details outlining the severity of the past flu season during which more people were killed than any seasonal influenza since the 1970s,

??49 million people were sickened by flu, roughly the combined population of Texas and Florida.

??960,000 people were hospitalized, more than the total number of staffed hospital beds in the United States.

79,000 people died, the average number of people who attend the Superbowl. The previous high for a regular flu season, based on analyses dating back more than three decades, was 56,000 deaths.

Already had mine, but never a bad time to remind folks. Also, don't forget pneumonia shot. I got all three (flu, pneumonia, and my DTT booster) all in one-stop-shopping at Kaiser.

Cheers, and good health. Remember, 30 minutes of brisk walking per day.

I walk 3 to 3 1/2 miles a day and some days do up to 6 miles. I also go up and down the steps several times a day. In bad weather I walk in the house around the table, around the sectional, around the island, around a chair and around a pillow by the front door, and down the hallway to the bedrooms and around a chair in my bedroom. I do this in 45 minutes or less. Actually it is better to walk around things if you can because the physical therapists will tell you it helps to keep your balance. Make sure there are no throw rugs to trip on, be careful of open staircases, and sharp corners.

The NIH has a workout routine for more emphasis on improving balance, that would be good to add too. They used to offer a free DVD, but that seems to be discontinued now; the videos from it are still available on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/user/NatlInstituteOnAging/playlists . And a brochure explaining the exercises can be either downloaded or ordered as a free physical copy from https://order.nia.nih.gov/publication/workout-to-go-mini-exercise-guide

And don't forget the new shingle shot Shingrix. It is expensive so make sure you insurance pays for it.
It is 2 shots and about $160 to $170 each. Some insurance will cover it if given at a pharmacy only if your physician writes a prescription. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/shingles/public/shingrix/index.html

And Shingrix is so much more effective that it's recommended even if you already had the older type of shingles vaccination.

For some unknown to me reason, some science areas, like vaccination and global warming have become politicized and more and more people refuse to "believe" in them. As a result, diseases that all but had been gone, like measles, are coming back...
