I just got a notice from Alliant CU warning about a scam involving its Visa debit card, a scam that sounds quite convincing as the incoming phone call from the scammers will even appear to come from Alliant in Caller ID. They will be trying to get you to reveal your PIN number.
I will add, if scammers have the phone numbers of Alliant debit card holders, it sure sounds like Alliant's system was breached at some point -- I never heard about that, but if it has been breached, I'm not happy that has not been revealed to all account holders. I don't even see this scam mentioned at the Alliant Website, I was notified by e-mail.
A scam has recently been identified in which a caller, pretending to be from Alliant’s Member Care Center, is calling Alliant members and attempting to obtain debit card PINs.If you receive a call from someone saying they are an Alliant Member Care representative who needs your debit card number or PIN, hang up and do not provide the information.
The caller, who appears to be calling from our phone number, will give you a reason why your PIN is needed. For example, the person may tell you that Alliant needs to reissue your debit card, but to do so you must provide your debit card number and PIN.
Alliant will never call you to ask you for your PIN. And, if Alliant needs to reissue your debit card, we will simply send you a new one – we will not call you to ask you to verify your card number or your PIN number.
