Ally Will Suspend All Transfers If A Transfer Fails. Marcus Locks Account If No Activity In 60-Days

I received an email from Ally stating that a transfer between my Ally checking account and my Marcus savings account failed to complete, and that funds were returned to checking. This in itself was not an issue. The email went on to say that all transfers between my Ally accounts and those at other FI's have now been suspended. Now this got my attention and created a serious crisis for me.

I called Ally the next day and was able to get the suspension lifted for all the other accounts transfers. I explained to them that Marcus had locked my account due to no activity or transactions having taken place within a 60-day period, and that Marcus has removed the lock on the account. Ally refused to remove the suspension on the Marcus account until they investigate which will take between 3-5 business days.

At no time did Marcus ever notify me of the account being locked via email or by any other means. When I logged into the account on the day of the issue there was no problem login in nor was there any notice stating that the account was locked to perform transfers or transactions.

I called the Marcus to find out why the transfer failed and the CSR stated that the account was locked due to no inactivity within a 60-day period, and that all transfers and transactions were affected. She stated that no notice is provided when this occurs, but that simply calling in to a CSR will fix the issue instantly.

This is pure BS on Marcus part because of the potential fees that this issue could cause at the other FI's when payments fails to complete. She stated that she would add a note to her team to address this issue and provide notice to customers when this occurs.

I now reset all my keep alive transfers to occur every month instead of every 6-months.

And the disclosures documents you copied when you opened the account state? Any notice of purported changes? Remember that Acts of God excuse performance in most jurisdictions...Trump did it in 2008

So let me get this right! Marcus is locking Savings accounts that have no activity for 60 days? If true, I have never seen this type of requirement for a Savings or Money Market account before. If I had an account with Marcus I would quickly transfer out ALL the funds and close the account. I've never had a checking account with this type of requirement.....let alone a savings account. Good that Ally lifted the lock on their side after you called them.

I looked up the Marcus DEPOSIT ACCOUNT AGREEMENT Effective July 1, 2020 and there is no information on the time period to lock the account due to inactivity. In fact all the information posted is very vague. Latest release here: https://tinyurl.com/y3kg3sc6

The only place they speak of dormancy is on paragraph 5 & 6 but there is no mention of he time period to declare dormancy.

I'm not sure about other accounts but it is the savings. I had auto deposits going in and out every 6-months but that did not keep it alive. It did drop to .26 cents for a few months.

I looked at this in the last couple of days for the same issue. The only issue I saw was 60 days for a ZERO balance savings account. See page 12

Your Online Savings Account reaches a zero balance and remains at zero for sixty (60) days;

So for enduser was your account at $0?

No I had a few dollars in it and I would send a deposit/withdraw every six months. It did drop bellow a dollar a month or two but never went to zero.

I have a Marcus savings account with $1.20 balance that I opened in January 2020 in connection with a promo bonus. The last activity on the account was in April 2020. I just called Marcus and they confirmed that my account is functional, that is, it is not locked.

When I opened the account I was told that the only activity requirement is that I check my account online every 12 months. I just spoke with a Marcus CSR who seemed knowledgeable. She said that if you have $1.00 or more in your account than checking your account every 12 months remains the only activity requirement. She did say, however, that if your balance is under $1.00 then you need to have transactional activity every 60 days to avoid having your account locked.

Enduser: Does this fit with your situation? Was your account balance under $1.00?

@RickZ It never went to zero, but it did drop to .26 cents for a month or two. So your scenario plays out correctly.
