With the IRS Free File program surpassing its founding goals of e-file and tax preparation, Intuit has elected not to renew its participation in the Free File Program for the upcoming tax season. This decision will allow us to focus on further innovation and to continue exploring how to best serve the complete financial health of all Americans through our products and services.

BUT STILL offering FREE filing. Just not via the IRS program. CNET quote:
"TurboTax Free Edition is a different product than what TurboTax donates for free tax preparation through the Free File program," the spokesperson said. "The Free File program offered by Intuit is called IRS Free File delivered by TurboTax. They are fairly similar, but the Free File program guidelines do not allow us to do things like provide our filers with a completely free of charge advance on their refund if they need money faster in order to pay bills."
Intuit, the company behind the tax filing software TurboTax, announced in July 15 ... that it would no longer participate in the IRS Free File Alliance

When I checked out the free file service some years back, it wasn't really free. Yes, you got to use the very basic software free to calculate and pay your federal tax (and it calculated mine wrong), if your income was below a certain amount. But you could do so only if you also used the service to do your state taxes, and you had to pay for that. So, you had to pay if you wanted to use the "free" service.

Why do I think that, or some other catch, is involved with the Turbo Tax IRS "free file" offering. Do you have to pay to calculate your tax, but no fee for transmitting it? They are in business to make money. And who really gives a free loan, an advance on any refund -- and they say they are pulling out of the federal free system in order to give out free loans? Are they next going to tell us they have a bridge to sell us?

TurboTax Free Edition is apparently only suitable for those with the simplest returns, "Warning: TurboTax Free Edition is not always free. It puts many people on track to pay."
