Called to close account (balance $149) and asked to mail check. Rep said they will not mail check unless over $250. They "keep the funds." Politely objected. Rep consulted manager. Told to stop by branch. Unfortunately nearest branch 2700 miles away. Manager consulted again. Told could do co-op shared branch. Drove 20 miles today to nearest shared branch CU to withdraw funds.

Write a check to yourself and in the memo say to close the account. Sign the check and deposit it in the new account.A phone call to the overseeing agency would be worth your time also. I just looked it up and I see that they are insured by the NCUA. Give them a call or  an email. They are very responsive. I had one of their tax lawyers call be at 10:30 on a Friday night saying she could not sleep and read my email. Asked I was tired and that she could not believe this was happening.  Asked if I would tell my experience, and she could ask questions. She fixed everything on a weekend that Labor Day was Monday in 2011.
