Here are the 7-day yields as of 9/8/2023 for some popular money market funds available at Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab: FMPXX @ 5.30%, VMRXX @ 5.29%, VMFXX @ 5.27%, SWVXX @ 5.24%, VUSXX @ 5.19%, FZDXX @ 5.16%, SNSXX @ 5.05%, SPRXX @ 5.04%, FZFXX @ 4.97%, and SPAXX @ 4.97%.

These funds don’t have FDIC coverage, but they do offer a useful alternative to savings accounts for liquidity. Although money market funds are considered extremely low-risk investments, some may include slightly more risk than others. Money market funds which invest predominantly in Treasuries are generally deemed to be the safest. Depending on the specific composition of the money market fund, redemption gates could be enforced. Before you purchase a money market fund, read the risk profile listed in the fund’s prospectus to determine if it satisfies your investment objectives.

If you are a brokerage client at Fidelity or Vanguard, you are probably already familiar with one or two of the money market funds in this list. For brokerage clients at Vanguard, the standard settlement account (also called sweep account) is typically VMFXX. For brokerage clients at Fidelity, the standard settlement account (also called the core position) is typically selected to be either SPAXX or FZFXX. Except for VMFXX, SPAXX, and FZFXX, the other money market funds in this list would need to be purchased as a separate investment in your brokerage account.

SWVXX and SNSXX are popular choices with Schwab clients. VMRXX and VUSXX are popular selections at Vanguard. SPRXX, FZDXX, and FMPXX are popular picks at Fidelity. FMPXX requires a minimum initial investment of $1 million. FZDXX requires a minimum initial investment of $100,000. VMRXX, VMFXX, and VUSXX each require a minimum initial investment of $3,000. SWVXX, SNSXX, SPRXX, FZFXX, and SPAXX have no minimum initial investment requirements.

That is a great list RichardW. I will just add one Fidelity money market fund. It is FZCXX which like FZDXX requires a 100k minimum but is a Government only MM fund unlike FZDXX which has some commercial paper. I use the Fidelity Cash Management Acct but I wish Vanguard had a CMA as their Money Market accounts always pay a bit more than Fidelity.

Great post Richard! This is why I wish my brokerage account was at Vanguard. Vanguard expense ratios are lowest, and importantly you get the standard settlement sweep account (paying you currently the 5.27% with initial amount of $3,000).
I have to admit my brokerage account was at TD Ameritrade and was recently consolidated into Charles Schwab. Charles Schwab never posts my brokered CD interest timely. They wait till "after hours" before they post your CD interest (to try to hold your liquid CD interest an extra day before you can send it out). At least TD Ameritrade posted immediately, the morning of the day, it was due. TD Ameritrade had great free streaming quotes. Charles Schwab's attempt to provide free streaming quotes is not reliable, freezes, and is very slow streaming (changing). Schwab's Investment Income page, 3/4 of the time does not load. Charles Schwab expense ratios on their mm funds are higher, yields lower, and Schwab does not offer this as a settlement account. These are reasons (especially no settlement account, Schwab pays nothing on your cash) why accounts are fleeing Charles Schwab brokerage and their stock has tanked, and Weiss ratings are also so low (D+). I would never recommend anyone (who is opening a new brokerage account) to open at Schwab. I am a very disappointed in CS brokerage and do not trust CS brokerage enough to invest in any money market fund with them. I am currently holding and sending out all my liquid cash to an FDIC insured savings account.
