Here are the 7-day yields as of 4/5/2024 for some popular money market funds available at Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab: VMRXX @ 5.28%, VUSXX @ 5.27%, VMFXX @ 5.27%, SWVXX @ 5.17%, FZDXX @ 5.14%, SPRXX @ 5.02%, SNSXX @ 5.02%, SPAXX @ 4.95%, FDLXX @ 4.93%, and FZFXX @ 4.93%. As of 4/5/2024 Vanguard lists the compound yield of VMRXX at 5.41%, VUSXX and VMFXX at 5.40%.

If you are a brokerage client at Fidelity or Vanguard you are probably familiar with money market funds since your settlement account is typically a money market fund. At Vanguard, the default settlement account is normally VMFXX. At Fidelity, the standard settlement account is usually selected to be either SPAXX or FZFXX. Except for VMFXX, SPAXX, and FZFXX, the other money market funds are normally purchased as a separate investment in your brokerage account.

SWVXX and SNSXX are common choices with Schwab clients. VMRXX and VUSXX are popular selections at Vanguard. SPRXX, FZDXX, and FDLXX are popular picks at Fidelity. FZDXX requires a minimum initial investment of $100,000. VMRXX, VMFXX, and VUSXX each require a minimum initial investment of $3,000. SWVXX, SPRXX, SNSXX, SPAXX, FDLXX, and FZFXX have no minimum initial investment requirements.

Money market funds don’t have FDIC coverage, but they do offer a useful alternative to savings accounts for liquidity. Although money market funds are considered extremely low-risk investments, some may include slightly more risk than others. Money market funds which invest predominantly in Treasuries are generally considered to be the safest. Before you purchase a money market fund, examine the composition of the fund’s portfolio, and read the risk profile listed in the fund’s prospectus to determine if it satisfies your investment objectives.

Money market fund dividends derived from U.S. government obligations are typically exempt from state income taxes in most states. California, Connecticut, and New York have threshold requirements which require that 50% of the fund’s assets at each quarter-end within the tax year consist of U.S. government obligations. If the fund does not meet the 50% threshold requirement, then none of the dividends will be state tax exempt.

Richard, This is a great post! After your similar post on 9/10/23 of these money market funds yields, I bookmarked it back then and quickly realized what I was missing out on (with only an account back then at TD Ameritrade/ Schwab). I immediately opened a Vanguard account and moved my brokered CD's and cash from Schwab to Vanguard and have been enjoying earning liquid between 5.26% to 5.33% in VMFXX and VUSXX since. Although not FDIC insured, money market funds are considered securities and SIPC insured up to $500,000 per separate account type (when held in your brokerage account in the event brokerage fails). I recently, after 30 years in Thrift Savings Plan, was forced out of the plan, and so I also opened a rollover IRA brokerage at Vanguard and am very happily SIPC insured up to $500,000 for that separate account type as well. Vanguard has the lowest expense ratios on money market funds of any of the brokerages, as well as the highest yields for the lowest risk/safest investments in Treasuries.

I am not familiar with the money market funds currently available at Wells Trade, Merrill Edge, or Citi Investment brokerages. Perhaps some of the DA readers who are familiar with those brokerages will comment in this thread.
