This got some media coverage last spring, so I was curious to see if the rate changed when other rates dropped. But the 100 year CD is still at 4.75%, though whether that's worth it for 100 years is something you'll only know in 2125, if the bank (and FDIC) are still around. Note that accrued interest can be taken out anytime without penalty but the principal has a 10 year EWP.
I suppose if some person or organization doesn't need the principal now (who maybe wants it for posterity in the distant future) they could use it as a source of monthly 4.75% income.
Or, if you open one for $1,000 and let it compound, that will be $103,610 for your heirs to spend in New Las Vegas, Mars in 2125. $500 will net them $51,805 for a new kiddie hoverboard.
I wonder if they've had any takers yet.
