$125 Checking Account Bonus at Banco Popular

Banco Popular
Banco Popular is offering up to $125 for opening its Totally Free Checking Account. The first $25 requires turning in your old debit card and unused checks from your other bank. $50 is for adding direct deposit, and $50 is for using their free online bill pay. They're also giving away a free gift (compact binoculars). Here's the promotional page link. It's not located under Banco Popular's main website, but it doesn't look like you can sign up online. The phone number listed is the same one listed under the main site (1-800-377-0800).

Branches are located in California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Texas. However, this bonus may be local only to New York and New Jersey. That special website only lists branches in those two states.

Banco Popular is FDIC insured (Certificate # 34967).

Thanks to the reader Hongjun who mentioned this bonus in the finding deals post.

Earlier today, I tried to open a free business checking account for the $50 bonus (for turning in my old checks and debit card) and a free iPod Nano at a branch in New Jersey despite not actually having a business. Needless to say, that didn't fly.

I did, however, open a free personal checking account. I turned in old checks and an old debit card for the $25 bonus. The banker told me that the bonus would be credited in a few business days. After I use the free online bill pay option, I will have another $50 credited 30 days later. And if I do direct deposit, I would get another $50 30 days later. The charge for checks was $13, so I didn't order any. I had the choice of a free George Foreman grill or free binoculars. I chose the binoculars. She also said that if I bring in a friend to sign up for an account, I could get another free gift.

There is no account minimum for either accounts, but they wanted a minimum $50 to open the account.

Thanks for keeping me posted on this. Glad to see you received the $50 bonus for bill pay.

I was surprised to see this promotion still available. I just called the number and learned that it's available at all of their branches through out the US. So I'll have to do another post.
