$100 Checking Account Bonus at TCF Bank

TCF National Bank
TCF Bank is offering $100 in its Cash is King promotion. It requires opening a new Free TCF Checking account with Direct Deposit and making 5 Check Card transactions within 30 days of account opening. The promotion is also being advertised in today's Denver Post. The ad is available online here. The offer expires 4/30/2008.

Here is the promotion's small print:
New accounts must be opened between March 1 - April 30, 2008. To qualify for the $100 Cash Offer, a direct deposit of $25 or more from a third party source must post to the new account by May 31, 2008, and account owner must make five purchases using their new TCF Check Card within 30 days of account opening. Offer is available to individuals and small businesses without a TCF Checking account in the past 90 days. TCF reserves the right to cancel or modify this promotion at any time. Customer is responsible for all applicable taxes. $100 Cash Offer will be automatically deposited directly into the customer's new checking account within 6-8 weeks of account opening, assuming all conditions are met. Offer not available in IL, IN, WI, or AZ. Visit your neighborhood branch for local promotions in your area.

The Totally Free Checking has no monthly service charges, no minimum balance requirements and online bill pay is free.

TCF Bank has often had similar promotions in the past. Gifts seem to be more common than cash. Last November they were offering a digital camcorder.

This promotion appears to require a branch visit. Branches are located in Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona. However, as noted in the small print, the bonus is only available in Colorado, Michigan and Minnesota. The bank is FDIC insured (Certificate # 28330).

At a Branch visit I was told the $100 bonus program also applied to their interest bearing checking account for seniors called TCF55+ Checking. This senior account includes free checks and pays 0.20%interest. I was also told that the direct deposit requirement could be fullfilled by an ACH transfer from a linked savings account like Countrywide.
