$150 Checking Account Promotion at National City

Oct 16, 2008 - 8:49 AM by Ken Tumin

Update 10/23/08: The bonus has increased to $200, and it has been extended to 10/31/08.

National City Bank is offering $150 for opening a checking account with direct deposit. The promotion page is located at www.nationalcity.com/cash. It's an online-only promotion, and it's only available through 10/22/2008. Some of the important details of the offer include:
  • Open any new personal checking account online by 10/22/2008 with a minimum $50
  • Requires direct deposit of at least $250 and a Visa Check Card issued with issued within 60 days of account opening
  • Limit of one bonus per household and available only to households without an existing National City checking account
  • $150 bonus will be credited to your account within 60 days after all conditions have been met
  • $150 credit is subject to 1099 reporting
I asked the banking representative a few questions via the online chat. According to the rep, there is no hard credit inquiry in the application. They just use ChexSystem. It is available for all of their checking accounts which includes their Free Checking which has no minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees.

According to the banking rep, this promotion is limited to those who reside in states where National City has branches. Branches are located in FL, IN, IL, KY, MI, MO, OH, PA and WI.

National City has also been offering some very good deals on CDs (see post).

National City Bank is a member FDIC (FDIC Certificate # 6557).

Thanks to the reader who emailed me news of this promotion.

I applied for this account yesterday. The branch I went to is just over the interstate from where I work; this will be very convenient to deposit my once-weekly paychecks from Cracker Barrel. The caveat is, unfortunately, that CB does not offer direct deposit due to the high turnover of employees.

As long as the direct deposit is done via ACH, it counts as a direct deposit, or so the guy gave me that impression.

$150 is a nice amount. That's my daughter's plane ticket home from college for the Thanksgiving break. ;-D

I entered my CA zip code and it still showed the promotion.

It also showed the promotion for me with a MD zip code, but when I tried to apply, they confirmed that you had to be in one of their branching states to actually get the bonus.

No matter what zip code you enter it shows the same thing.

However, when actually applying online, all applications are rejected if you don't live in the regional banking area.

Does anyone know if this has to be a payroll direct deposit or would a transfer from ING or Etrade work?

I was told the ACH must be from payroll, SS or other government employment.

This deal has been updated. It's now good through October 31, and the bonus being offered has increased to $200.
