Competitive CD Rates at First Federal Savings Bank of Elizabethtown in Kentucky & Indiana

First Federal Savings Bank of Elizabethtown

First Federal Savings Bank of Elizabethtown is having a CD special called the November to Remember. The promotion has two CDs with quite competitive rates: a 1.81% APY 15-month CD and a 2.41% APY 27-month CD. Minimum deposit is $500. These rates are listed in the bank's CD promotions page as of 11/04/2010.

The bank also has some competitive standard CD and IRA CD rates. These include a 3.97% APY 10-year CD, a 2.97% APY 5-year CD and a 2.76% APY 4-year CD. Minimum deposit is $500. These rates are listed in the bank's deposit rates page as of 11/04/2010.

The bank has its CD disclosure on its website. The early withdrawal penalties listed vary by term. The 5-year CD has a 9-month interest penalty, and the shorter terms listed above have a 6-month penalty. I can't find any mention of the 10-year CD early withdrawal penalty.

There's also a $50 bonus for opening the bank's Value Checking Account. Here's the promotions page link. The promotion ends 12/31/2010. The downside to this promotion is that Value Checking has a $4 monthly maintenance service charge.

It appears that a branch visit is required to open an account. Branches are located in Kentucky and in Southern Indiana. Most of the branches are in Kentucky. Some of the Kentucky cities include Louisville, Elizabethtown, Shepherdsville, Radcliff, Brandenburg and Bardstown. The Indiana cities include Georgetown, Corydon, Elizabeth and Lanesville.

The bank has an overall health score at of 3 out of 5 with a Texas Ratio of 40.47% (average) based on 6/30/2010 data. It's a sizable bank with $1.08 billion in deposits. Please refer to our financial overview of First Federal Savings Bank for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1936 (FDIC Certificate # 28610).

I have done business with First Federal for several years and was very happy with it.  However, I was concerned to see how low their ratings have dropped and now have great concern about purchasing more CDs with them.  I prefer my banks to have higher than a 2 Star Bankrate rating and was surprised that this forum is basically listing them as a bank to do business with.  Does it not matter if a bank is having financial difficulties?  Does anyone know how close this particular bank is to failing??  Thanks!
