High-Interest Reward Checking Account at Quest Credit Union - KS Only

POSTED ON BY

Quest Credit Union

Kansas residents have quite a few choices for reward checking accounts. Quest Credit Union's iDeal Checking is one of the better ones. It has a very competitive rate when the monthly requirements are met. The rates as of 10/26/2011 are:

  • 3.51% APY up to $25,000
  • 1.01% APY over $25,000
  • 0.15% if requirements are not met

In addition to the high rates, ATM fee refunds nationwide are provided if the following monthly requirements are met:

  • 10 or more Visa Check Card purchases per month (signature based or credit transactions)
  • one Direct Deposit or one automatic payment
  • Enroll and receive your statements electronically

There are no monthly service charge even if you don't meet the above requirements. The minimum initial deposit is $25, but there are no minimum balance requirements.

Credit union membership is open to those who reside, work or worship in one of many Kansas counties. You can also qualify for membership via several select employee groups. Please refer to the credit union's membership page for more details.

Quest Credit Union branches are located in Topeka, Fort Riley, Lenexa and Pittsburg.

The credit union has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 5 stars (out of 5) with a Texas Ratio of 6.42% (excellent) based on June 2011 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Quest Credit Union for more details. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 61823).

How These Checking Rates Compare

There's one credit union open to Kansas residents which currently has a better rate. It's at Communications Federal Credit Union which has a reward checking account paying 4.00% APY for balances up to $30K. It's available to all OK and KS residents (see review).

These Kansas rates are much higher what many other people in other states can get. If you're not in a state like Kansas, your only option for a reward checking account may be one of the nationally available reward checking accounts. The best rate for those is only 2.52% APY for balances up to $25K.

Finding Other Reward Checking Accounts

To find the best reward checking accounts in your area or that are available nationwide, please refer to our reward checking account table. Use the "Filter Accounts" button on top of the table to select either nationwide accounts and/or your state. Also, you can use this button to select the investment amount. This allows you to compare accounts with different rate tiers. For more details about how to use the rate tables, please refer to our rate table guide.

Am I missing something here?  Why are there so many posts showing banks with higher interest rates for "checking accounts"?  I never fool with these because one has no idea how long the rate will be available and it is always for just a certain maximum of funds you can use it for.  Any one with a decent amount of savings would have to hopscotch to a lot of other banks and try to spead their money around in order to be able to count on getting the higher interest rate.  You can't set up a budget as to what amount of money you can count on getting for the year because in a few months the rate may have crashed!  These checking accounts do not fit my criteria for my financial plans but maybe some others can find a good reason to use them.  How I wish we were seeing such offers for CDs!!
