Competitive CD Rates at Transportation FCU - Limited Membership

POSTED ON BY

Transportation Credit Union

It doesn't look like it's easy to qualify for membership at Transportation Federal Credit Union. If you can find a way to qualify, you'll have access to some very competitive CD and IRA CD rates. The Jumbo IRA CDs have the best rates. These include a 2.62% APY for 5 years, a 2.01% APY for 3 years and a 1.26% APY for 1 year. The regular CD rates are close for the long-terms, but the shorter terms have much lower rates. The best non-IRA Jumbo CD rates include a 2.52% APY for 5 years and 2.01% APY for 4 years. The Jumbo CDs have a $100,000 minimum deposit. Rates for a $1,000 minimum are 10 basis points lower (except for the 5-year CD rate which is 25 basis points lower). These rates are listed in the credit union's rates page as of 3/29/2012.

As I mentioned above, it's not easy to qualify. Membership is primarily limited to select employee groups. The two main ones are the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There are a few dozen other companies listed for the Washington, DC area and for the Boston area. Please refer to the credit union's Who Can Join page for more details.

Branches are located in Washington, DC and in Cambridge, MA. The credit union is a member of the CU Service Centers so members can conduct many banking transactions at other credit unions around the nation that are also part of this network.

The credit union has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 5 stars (out of 5) with a Texas Ratio of 3.58% (excellent) based on December 2011 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Transportation FCU for more details. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 3140).

How These CD Rates Compare

This credit union's long-term Jumbo CD rates are above the best CD rates that are nationally available. The best 5-year CD rate is 2.35% APY at Justice Federal Credit Union for a $100K minimum (2.25% APY for a $500 minimum). If you have a military connection, you may be able to qualify for Air Academy Federal Credit Union which has a 2.45% APY 5-year CD for a $10K minimum deposit. These rates are accurate as of 3/29/2012.
