$150 Checking Account Bonus at Citizens Bank in Several States

RBS Citizens, National Association

Citizens Bank is offering a checking account bonus of up to $150. The bonus doesn't require too much work. One downside is that the checking accounts do have monthly service fees, but there are easy ways to avoid them. This promotion is scheduled to last until 2/28/2013. The details are listed at Here's summary of what's required to earn the full $150:

  1. Open your first new personal checking account by 2/28/13
  2. Get $50 when you setup direct deposit and have a single deposit of $500 or more clear your new checking account by 4/30/13
  3. Get $50 when you enroll in Online Banking and pay 3 or more bills online that post and clear your new checking account by 4/30/13
  4. Get an additional $50, for a total of $150, for completing both steps 2 and 3 by 4/30/13

Below is a copy of the offer's small print:

You must open your first new personal checking account between 1/26/13 and 2/28/13. Primary account holder may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any personal checking account within the previous six months. Offer may be withdrawn without notice and cannot be combined with any other checking offer. Your account must be open and in good standing to qualify for this offer.

To earn the $50 Online Bill Pay Bonus: Enroll in Online Banking; use the Bill Pay service to schedule at least 3 bill payment transactions that post and clear your checking account by 4/30/13. Bill payments must be initiated through the bank's online banking bill payment service and be made to three different payees and for a recipient other than someone in your household. To earn the $50 Direct Deposit Bonus: Have a single direct deposit of at least $500 post and clear your account by 4/30/13. If you meet both the Online Bill Pay and Direct Deposit requirements, you will earn an additional $50 bonus for a total of $150 in bonuses. Bonus will be deposited into your qualifying checking account by 6/30/13 and will be labeled as “Balance Builder Bonus”. One bonus per customer. Bonus will be reported to the IRS.

The bank's Green Checking should qualify for this bonus. You can avoid the $9.99 monthly maintenance charge by either having at least 5 qualifying payment transactions per month from your account OR maintaining an average balance of $1,500. When I last posted on a Citizens Bank promo, DA member Kaight commented that ACH debits pulled from his Alliant Credit Union account did qualify for these 5 qualifying payment transactions.

There's an online application, but it requires that you enter your zip code. If you're zip code is outside of the bank's market area, you won't be allowed to continue. Citizens Bank branches are located in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

For those in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, you can open an account at Charter One which is Citizens Bank's brand for the midwest. This same promotion is listed at

Make sure you print out the offer.  Twice I had to go into a branch to show them a hard copy of the offer to get the bonus when they did not pay it.  One of the times I took advantage of a bonus offer from them was from having seen the offer in the local newspaper.  I cut out and saved that.  The bank manager actually got out a magnifying glass to go over the small print, and then asked to photocopy the newspaper ad.  The bonus was deposited a couple of days later.

One of the offers then was $100 for either opening a CD of at least $10000 OR depositing $10,000 new money in a money market account.  I asked if there was any hard pull and was told no.  There turned out to be a hard pull. I don't know if it was for the new checking account or the money market account.
